When Cyclops was badass

Some people seem to be under the impression that Cyclops never kicked ass until Joss Whedon got hold of him. I refute that. Hey, even Ultimate Cyclops has been known to have moments of sheer badassery. For example, this. Betrayed in the Savage Land, Wolverine dropped him to his death from a clifftop to remove him from the equation and go all Claudius with Jean.

Thankfully Scott's not quite that easy to dispose of.

From Ultimate X-men #29.

Of course, Scott's sheer stubborness means he survives long enough to be rescued. When he finally rejoins the X-men, Wolverine wastes time with the alpha male posturing and an epic battle between the two ensues.

Okay, maybe not so epic.

Like I said - Badass.

That was rather awesome. I love the last image - flattened Wolverine. VAM to you, sir!

The sub-board /co/ (comics & cartoons) on the imageboard 4chan (http://4chan.org) had a Cyclops appreciation thread yesterday.

/co/ is just about the only board on 4chan worth reading on occasion.

Ah. Coincidence then. I've never been on 4chan.

Ah, I remember when wal_lace posted this sequence on S_D 1.0. Honestly, I think this sequence is one of my favorite things from the Ultimateverse. Eating centipedes? HARDCORE, Mr. Summers.

We do need more Scott love in S_D.

This is a great example of how the sloppiness of Millar's work frustrates me to no end. It's mostly great writing, but unless mutants need a lot, lot less water than regular humans, you won't be able to survive solely on the moisture from eating bugs for twenty-six days, especially if you're injured. Kangaroo rats that have adapted to life in the desert, maybe; people, not so much. Millar could have stuck a teensy little spring at the bottom of that hole so easily.

If you lived twenty six days after getting your arm bent around yourself like that wouldn't some healing be done leaving it stuck that way?

He also doesn't eat enough fast enough to survive on the diet. I put it down to the Savage Land island being magic or something, and that was why the machine mutated too.

..Wasn't there a story The Hidden Years about a savage land area where people just didn't die?

I assume it was three or four days max before he got rescued, Cyclops was just hallucinating or forgot how to count.

That line about "when I get out of here I'm going to eat these things all the time" always struck me as extremely humorous.

(Does anyone actually know if there was ever a scene of Cyclops eating centipedes after this storyline? Because that would be awesome.

616 Cyclops, at around the same time, had a mini-series in which he was even MORE badass. Shame I don't own any of those issues though.

Was that the BKV Icons series? I have it somewhere. I'll dig it out at some point.
