New Avengers #51 Bendis picks up a dangling plot-line
Greetings True Believers! My first post here! I wanted to post these pages from NA #51 because it picks up on a minor Alias plot-point that Bendis tossed into the ocean and forgot about. Jessica Jones and her high-school crush on Peter Parker. Spoilers and enjoy!

We begin with dinner at Bucky's place.

They're eating and decide that Ronin will lead the Avengers and Carol will be his second in command. Then they discuss trust issues. Everyone wants Peter to take off his mask. He is iffy about it but since he loves being an Avenger....

I took out the last scan because I overposted. It had Jessica stalking away mad because Peter didn't remember her.
I edited further to obey the rules. :(

Interesting. My question is why the fuck Bendis didn't bring up JJ's crush pre-BND? Is Bendis planning something? JJ/PP? Probably not but it's an interesting thought.

I already posted this and I had to delete it.

Only four pages from a new comic can be posted, and four pages from this ish were already posted.

I thought it was four pages per poster so that no one poster can take full control of a new issue. But the actual limit was 7 pages.

Thanks for the heads-up, I took a scan down.

Since four pages were already posted, you can only post three pages.

It would have been nice if I had known that before pyrotwilight made me take my post down.

Anyway, this post is eight pages. So it goes over the limit anyway.

Yeah, no. Recent comics still have the 7 page limit. We introduced the 4 page rule because we were getting complaints about claim staking.

Seriously, Bendis is almost completely back on my good side just from this title. Laughing in the face of OMD? Check. Completely ignoring the whole "Carol's powers don't work and she's dead now anyway" stuff from MS MARVEL? Check. Hilarious Bendisian repartee in the mouths of characters to whom it is completely suited? Check. It is fantastic.

When Bendis is on, he's on. His dialogue is sometimes painful but can also be priceless.

The post-SI state of affairs is the first time I've liked NA since Civil War.

Still tired of the street level business so hopefully Dormammu will widen the scope. And SI was dreadful. And he still cannot long-term plot. But I would not be as much of an Avengers buff if not for his revamp.

See, I think Bendis needs to stay street-level, because that's clearly where his strength is. His banter-y language, his inability to long-term plot and the focus and scope that his stories default to are all much more suited to street-level heroes than big epic fights with Dr. Doom or whoever. ALIAS was amazing, and barring the SI stuff, NEW AVENGERS has been great, everyone talks up USM, but MIGHTY has been lackluster under his tenure. Seems very much that when he focuses too wide he loses his knack.

If he can only do street level, then honestly he shouldn't be doing the Avengers IMO. That's not what the book is about.

Despite my major issues with the Collective and Michael Pointer and all that shit, I felt that his work on that arc and the first one were quite decent examples of classic Avengers storytelling with a Bendis spin. This Dormammu thing looks to be shaping up the same way.

I agree he can be awkward with a larger canvas, but I was not as harsh on his Mighty arcs as others and I felt he did all right (excepting the fact that his entire run on that title was a warm-up for SI, and almost no one got any characterization). I think he can do well with Avengers-style story if he is closely controlled.

If it remains "Brooklyn Avengers" with them all hanging out like fifty blocks from me, I'm just going to get tired of that. Why are SPIDER-MAN, MS. MARVEL, HAWKEYE, MOCKINGBIRD, WOLVERINE, and CAPTAIN FUCKIN' AMERICA hanging out on the corner shooting the shit? Are there no Kree to fight? No Dr. Doom? No cosmic threats? No Magneto? It just seems improbable for them to take up the Avengers mantle, promise to uphold their reputation, yet sit around in the boroughs fighting street crime while the Dark Avengers and the Euro cousins in Mighty do all the heavy lifting. No one's going to tell me Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Wolverine and Bucky are all gonna be like "Morgan LeFay? Chthon? Psh, I got a black market iPod racket RIGHT HERE."

Hey, they could be Ultron-infected iPods, you never know.

That's not what the book is about.

Well, that's kind of what NEW has been about, which is why it's worked. It had a bunch of mostly street-levels - people who, sure, *could* take the cosmic stuff if they had to, no hero worth his mask wouldn't, but were more comfortable with and more suited to the small stuff. Wolverine and Hawkeye spend as much time fighting the Avengers-level menaces as they do smaller stuff, sure, but usually with a more high-power team.

Actually Carol and Clint are a bit odd-man-out right now, and I do wonder how that's going to play, at least between now and when it occurs to someone to remind Bendis she's dead.

The best part is that immediately after screaming like an old lady about not taking his mask off, and no one can no, and OMG WHAT HAVE I DONE, there's a scream outside and Pete jumps outside in to the middle of the street with the rest of the New Avengers.

Still unmasked.

Ho-hum.

Do they ever tie up all the dangling threads left by a mega-crossover? Sometimes it's bad writing, sometimes it's Chekhov's Gun, and sometimes it's bad writing that years later becomes Chekhov's Gun.

Geez Clint, paranoid arsehole much?

Sorry, this might have been cute to read, but the underlying "You tell us who you are or you're out" to Spider-Man, who has been in the game for a damnsight longer than Hawkeye has, just pisses me off.

You don't trust Spider-Man, fine, fire him, or you ask him to unmask privately and allow him the dignity of a chance to resign. But you DON'T put the onus on him by making it a blackmail situation in front of all his team-mates.

I think the point of the writing is that they are, in fact, all being paranoid assholes, but also, Hawkeye has long had a history of being kind of a jerk where Peter's concerned. I mean, there's no hate-on vendetta, but they have this tendency to rub each other the wrong way - all the way back to Spidey's first recruitment where he and Hawkeye got into an all-out brawl. Good times, good times.

That said, while I'm not unsympathetic to Clint's perspective, I'm ... not sure what he's expecting to accomplish, here. I mean, the Skrulls faked Jarvis, yo, whom Clint and several of the others knew intimately - it's not like taking off a spandex mask would be a huge issue.

Yay, it finally comes out!

Actually, what I thought was weird was that there was the early Secret Invasion issue when Dr. Strange did that wackydo where he pulled up everyone's visions of how they saw themselves Deep Inside (and it's never been explained how Veranke got out of that one, hmmm, but Bendis has always been terrible with Strange's powers). Peter sees himself as his gawky high school self and ... Jessica doesn't recognize him. I felt cheated at the time, so I'm wondering whether someone pointed out the lapse to BB, maybe?

Luke's reaction seems a bit over the top, honestly. I mean, yes, maybe a little joking/mild WTF is in order, but he likes Spidey, so what's with the insultedness?

(P.S. Sorry I didn't respond to your PM earlier - I was otherwise engaged. I see schmevil's answered you, though.)

Yeah that DRS moment and the various other pre-CW New Avengers scenes where she should have said something. I think BB is poking OMD or maybe, just maybe setting up a new love triangle. It's a long-shot but I think it would be interesting.

Luke's reaction? I think he reacted that way because both him and Jessica will always be asking themselves the same question in the back of their heads. "Would we have gotten together if we never had the baby?" It's not a great way to start a relationship so I see moments like this as totally in-character.

(P.S. Don't worry about it! I'm just glad I got the posting rules down.)

Re: I second your yay!

Oh gosh, I really hope there isn't a love triangle. A lot of what made the Alias flashback scenes fun was that they skirted on the edges of Mary Sue-age - she had a crush on Peter Parker! She woke up from her coma the day Galactus tried to eat Earth! She learned to fly and tripped over Thor! etc, etc. - but didn't actually go there because Bendis always kept those encounters kind of tantalizing, and never made them smarmy. The crush is funny and hilarious in a Parker luck kind of way because it never went anywhere.

The way you describe Luke's reaction makes more sense, but it still seems very anvilicious.

I had fanwanked JJ/PP if by some miracle Secret Invasion had ended with Luke doing a Noble Sacrifice. (I love Luke but srsly, break time.)

How many people at Marvel even care about OMD or continuity anymore? What was the point of re-masking him to the heroes? The next ASM has him unmasked with the FF, for God's sake.
