Cry for Justice #5 cover unveiled

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Surely Jay Garrick is rushing to give 'the talk' to Freddy the same way he did Billy?
If you remember the solicit had an interior from issue 2 as the cover image. Things to keep in mind, if this is as it seems the world's mightiest MORTAL is involved with a kryptonian. How is that going to affect Lane's plans and propaganda? Surely Shazam is important to his Earth vs Krypton war. Intruiging.

I surely wouldn't mind seeing that pairing, except that it will probably be handled as a crack!fest rather than anything I can take seriously.

I'm not so sure. I think this will run through New Krypton. Remember the Supergirl Origin and Omen had Kara kissing a mystery man so it will likely run into the solo

Lot of things make this a crack pairing for me. First, there's the whole idea of taking Robinson's Don't Cry for Me, Justice/Argentina as a serious JLA title. Which I can't. It's just laughably bad.

Secondly, it's been made clear in Kingdom Come (out of continuity, I know) and Power of Shazam (where the series left off) that it was Mary and Freddy as the OTP. Which makes it all the more odd that he's macking on Supergirl who was still twisting Mary's neck even after Freddy told her to stop in Final Crisis (never followed up on or mentioned again).

Never mind the fact that Freddy as Captain Marvel/Shazam/whatever DC is calling today will eventually go the way of the dodo when Billy comes back as Cap (as we all know he will at some point).

What bugs me the most is I can not take this version of Freddy Freeman seriously - because DC obviously doesn't. He went from a slim teen (and he was historically the only Marvel who looked his age) with a bouffant Elvis hairdo into a bulky hunky long-haired romance novel cover model 20-something-adult in the historical red Cap suit. Anyone who didn't read "Trials" might think this is Billy/Cap kissing Supergirl (what would Stargirl say!) because apparently DC thinks the two characters are interchangeable.

*Waits for the obligatory jealous Mary Marvel vs. Supergirl fight*

At least it's a break from Kon and Cassie.

Though i liked Kara and Owen.....

Yes. Mary's interest was pretty made clear at the end of the run of Ordway's Power of Shazam title.

Of course since then the only actual interaction the two have shared as a "couple" since that book was cancelled is him transforming her back from Evil Mary to Regular Mary at the end of Final Crisis. In fact, the whole start of Mary's disastrous Countdown storyline is predicated on the fact that Freddy has payed for Mary's hospital bills (because her parents apparently didn't exist according to the Countdown people) and then left her a short note telling her not to look for him (basically telling her to get lost). It was all downhill from there.

Owen and Kara's friendship was awesome and even though she acted a bit suggestive with him, he was never interested in her in THAT way.

I wish they brought him back as a guest for an issue, he and Kara were awesome.

I would LOL if Jay gave him the talk, but Freddy looks younger than Billy as Captain Marvel, doesn't he? And Kara isn't Courtney.

Also, Shade! *fangirl squee*

Don't think so, Freddie is older than Billy IIRC, and Freddie doesnt't change his appearance in his SHAZAM-empowered form, at least not in the sense of making himself look older.

He's a college boy...freshman or sophomore at this point, IIRC. Which puts him within 3 years of Kara, probably only 1 or 2 older.

Kara should be 18 by now, in B&B Hal said she was 17 but then in her title they pushed her age back to 16.

So technically she's still in the 16/17 range and Freddy might be around 18/19.

As old as the writers want him to be. Billy and Mary are 17 (same age as Stargirl) that's established. And Freddy (according to Power of Shazam) is no more than 2 years older than them - which would make him 19. But IMO he looks like a bodybuilder he's in his late 20s in Cry for Justice.

There was a whole issue of "Brave and the Bold" by Mark Waid a couple of years back in which Kara has an obvious crush on Hal Jordan (it was GL/Supergirl team up) and he has to keep reminding himself that she's "seventeen, seventeen, seventeen". He keeps repeating that throughout the book to remind himself she's jailbait (even though she's an alien from another culture and this is the same guy who was able to get with 13-year old Arisia -who rapidly aged herself to be with him- on that reasoning). Recently in her own book Kara just celebrated a birthday so she should be 18 now.

But we are dealing with comic book ages here. It's a world where Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are perpetually 35.

He also reminds himself that he's "not Ollie," which- oh, Hal, honey. Sure, Ollie is the one who's so well-known to be unable to say no to lovely underage-ish girls. Lovely underage-ish flying blonde alien girls in miniskirts.

Freddy? Like I said above, college freshman or sophomore - a shade older than Billy, who is the same age as Stargirl, who's been reverted to 17.

So, even given a certain amount of vagueness about each of their ages, that's not among the aspects of a relationship between them which would be iffy.

Yeah but in her own title they mentioned her being 16 (which threw me off since, like you said in B&B Hal said she was 17).

Most likely she's 17.

"Just Us!" I really like this pairing, and it's been the only highlight (other than the art) of the series for me! Kara and Freddy have problematic ages and histories (the Kryptonite poisoning reset still burns!), but they're two of my faves! I hope DC doesn't screw it up.

I gagged a little when I saw this. This will not be handled well, not to mention the two lusted after one another once they appeared together in the mini which was incredibly bad of both characters. The only way they can make it worse is if they have Miss Martian and Supergirl fight over him.

Wait...who is he? I don't know much about the Shazam family books, so I'm a little clueless about them. All I know is Mary Marvel went evil, and...that's the last I heard of her.

That said, I remember hearing about Shade from a Casstoon that kept going on about how utterly awesome he is...I thought he was a vertigo character. What's he doing here?

Wait...who is he? I don't know much about the Shazam family books, so I'm a little clueless about them.

Freddy Freeman, aka Captain Marvel Junior, aka CM3, aka Shazam, started out as Captain Marvel's kid sidekick, a young boy with a bum leg who became a super hero when he said the words "Captain Marvel," making him the only superhero being published who couldn't say his own name.

A bunch of baloney went down and Captain Marvel's whole power dynamic shifted and I guess Freddy's calling himself Shazam, now, except he's not because that's now the magic word he uses to gain power.

And again, he can't say his own frikkin' name.

(Seriously, people, just make him Lieutenant Marvel, already!)

That said, I remember hearing about Shade from a Casstoon that kept going on about how utterly awesome he is...I thought he was a vertigo character. What's he doing here?

I believe you're thinking of Shade the Changing Man, originally a Steve Ditko creation for DC who "changed"--changed his appearance, basically--with the aid of extradimensional technology (a ripping espionage thriller back in the day), reinvisioned as a Vertigo character, a literal "changing man," so much so that at one point, for a while, he changed gender.

This is "The Shade," a golden age Flash villain given new life in the pages of Starman, and his own mini, which you should really track down to learn more about him. Think Jack Dawkins given immortality and power over shadows, and the moral ambiguity he never managed to develop fully in Oliver Twist.
