And yet there is much evidence of it being the soldiers on the ground who DO have the empathy since often the opposite side really IS made up of people just like them and they know it.

The above two posters are getting at what I meant.

Basically, Gen. Lane is being portrayed as a 2D zealot bastard rather than an interesting, idealistically motivated antagonist, who's actually kind of sympathetic because of all he's sacrificed for a perceived "greater good".

It would be nice if he were written that way, but he's not.
