"It's 11 o'clock: do you know where your children are?"

Three scans from Fantastic Four #572.

Even as the "Fantastic Reed" arc wraps up, Hickman sets up next issue's story, featuring some of the other characters.

Sorry, Johnny, looks like you'll have to keep things PG.

Well, this looks to be a fun experience for Uncle Johnny.

He makes everyone look creepy and doll-like. Except for Ben, who looks fine for some reason.

Ben always looks fine. His design is so simple you actually have to work to mess it up.

I think the art really fits the FF here, but each to his own I guess.

Same, it looks like Sue has been, like, inflated or something . . . not a good look.

What's eating you about it? I mean, it looks like fairly standard superhero stuff, a little more expressive maybe. Very 80s, I'm thinking.

It looks forced, too posed. There's no... I dunno how to say it. No expressiveness in it, and it just looks creepy. I had this same issue with the artist's JSA run.

Whereas Valeria's head looks pasted on, like it's too big for her body. -.-

Children that age do tend to have heads large in proportion to their bodies. It's nice to see an artist who doesn't simply draw short adults.

Sue is well-proportioned and stands as if she actually has solidity. Most artists have the characters visually floating with no connection to the floor or ground. The middle panel in the bottom tier is a well-done pose, not one of the stock poses learned from a hundred other comics.

What's weird to me is that bottom tier is far better, in both posing and relation to the ground, than the whole first page. Sue seems really awkward up there, and seems to be floating slightly on the ramp, as opposed to the bottom where she's relaxed and on the ground.

Same way the kids look much better on the bike than they do in the room together, and Johnny doesn't look good at all. There are a couple of panels where even for a kid Val's head looks too big, but it's sort of a fine line to walk so it's forgivable.

Looking at it again, the art is uneven, as you say. It's still better than the usual steroid-monster men and implant-burden women we get these days, and children are always hard to draw convincingly, so I'd say it's still pretty good.

Johnny's exuberant pose doesn't work at all. It's the weakest part of this sample, I'd say.

Agree with you there. I think there are simply angles and poses the artist is better at than others, which is fair as far as it goes, but I'd honestly expect a little more consistency from someone at pro level. Unfortunately, a lot of comic artists don't really get the "solid drawing" concept that well either.

Val looks a tad creepy but other than that the artwork seems ok to me, I too want to know what is bothering everyone.

Yeah, there are a couple of panels where her head is too big, but otherwise I really like it. It suits the Four (apart from Reed seriously needing to shave).

Hitch had a hard time getting the ages right; he drew them about the same, when Valeria should have been about 3 compared to Franklin's, er, whatever.

Millar really started dumbing him down imo. I still cling to the idea that Franklin is just playing dumb because he's lazy.

OK, this looks like it could be fun. I detect the possibility of some 'Power Pack'-style adventures, with Ben and Johnny as the exasperated adults. Good times ahead!

I'm much preferring this artist over the previous one. (Hated Hitch's Reed) This issue was great, and all the more so from it not being padded out to fit the standard trade paperback reprinting.

I especially loved the panel, (Not shown here,) where a long legged Reed is desperately trying to outrun a Celestial to the portal at the end of the dimensional bridge. Just so much fun!

And the page where Reed realises how much his family and friends are THE most important thing in his life, is just beautiful.
(THIS Reed would never have did what he did during Civil War..)
