Mahnke has been an exceptional artist for years, but the Lantern titles have really kicked his awesome into overdrive.

In an industry full of photo-tracers and guys who think that "extraterrestrial" means "human with different skin color and extra forehead wrinkles" (O HAI STAR TREK), Mahnke was BORN to draw alien characters.

I thought Van Sciver designed most of these characters before he had to leave the title?

Did he? If so, I apologize for not giving him credit where it's due.

Still, designs like that could have been fucked up by the wrong artist VERY easily - again, Land, Horn, Deodato or any number of others would have reduced them to "humans with weird stuff on their heads." Mahnke has been drawing weird-ass alien shit since at least Major Bummer in the '90s.

Well I think Mahnke designed the Orange Lantern constructs which are chasing Larfleeze here as Black Lanterns.

But yeah---illustrated graphic novel of MOTE IN GOD'S EYE by THIS guy would give you nightmares.

Budget? I'll buy as an excuse. Empathy factor? FUCK THAT. If you can't empathize with alien-looking aliens, get the fuck out of sci-fi fandom.

Eh. The empathy factor might be bull from an objective standpoint, but consider that the suits in charge thought that Spock was too alien for viewers to connect with. I tend to cry "budget" in this case, too, granted, especially considering the laughable results of many of the few attempts to make truely alien beings that come to mind, but I woudn't be surprised if the powers that be honestly thought that their viewers had the empathetic range of a tricorder.

The suits in charge of Star Trek also thought America wasn't ready to see a white man and a black woman kiss onscreen, which is one of many reasons why it's my considered opinion that 90 percent of the suits in charge of anything deserve to be sodomized with telephone poles.

And what's especially funny about your example is that Spock became THE MOST POPULAR CHARACTER ON THE SHOW, so their "logic" doesn't even work from A PURELY MERCENARY CAPITALIST STANDPOINT.

I know, and I love it :D Not quite as much as I love that the response to the Kirk/Uhura kiss was overwhelmingly positive, but a lot. The parade of fail on part of the Star Trek higher-ups is a magnificent thing to behold through one's fingers. And these people thought viewers were morons.

I love that one of the letters that Gene Roddenberry got was from an old Southern gentleman who had been opposed to interracial relationships his entire life, but when he saw "Kirk with that gorgeous gal in his arms, doin' what a man is supposed to do," he changed HIS ENTIRE LIFETIME of beliefs on that score.

Everything that hits TV has to go by the suits. Consider it the empathy factor of the suits, not the viewers.

...

30 years later, they kill Firefly. Same stupidity.

To be fair, Firefly, while not a bad show, was hardly a great show, either.

Yeah, I used to be on the OMG JOSS IS SO PERSECUTED bandwagon too, and yes, the suits didn't do him any favors, in terms of airing episodes out of order and such, but then again, with more leeway, the best he's given us since then has been ... Dollhouse. Yeah. And I'm sorry, but if Joss didn't have shitloads of fans going OMG HE'S SO FEMINIST, everybody would be denouncing THAT show for the creepy-ass Chuck Austen-level misogyny that it is.

So, when it comes to Joss versus the suits, NEITHER side is right! :)

Dollhouse, I'm not a fan of. But Firefly just _worked_. Maybe it would have flamed out in the third season, but the first season is gold, and the second season would probably have been as good.

I saw the first few episodes the other day after years of listening to the hype. I honestly don't see what the bother was. It's basically a bunch of stock dysfunctional space-travellers, an unlikeable captain, a bunch of cultural settings ripped out of Blade Runner, and a large volume of childish humour and dialogue ("You have a fancy hat" is an insult? Really?).

Not really up to the standard set by, say, The Venture Bros.

Dammit, now I want a Venture Bros Firefly parody.

It's to each his own, I'm afraid. I just generally find anything Whedon does to be immature and depthless - in particular, that awful episode with the Incredible Traitor Woman.

Plus, don't knock Blake's, at least it had Brian Blessed.

This looks to be edging towards an "admit you didn't like Firefly" thread. I've never understood those. I can probably think of highly-rated series that I didn't like, but I don't go slinging the word "overrated" around on the slightest pretext.

Of course, that may have something to do with my immunity to Hype.

I don't know if it was you I mentioned this to or not. But I heard when Dushku got the contract to do some shows for Fox and she was talking with Joss they basically came up with the idea for Dollhouse as being like actors filling roles.

Atrocitus showing up there does suggest the four Black Lanterns on his world got their asses kicked. I wonder why he's going for Larfleeze's battery though? Maybe he wants to try to absorb the BL's? Or he might not realize one of the two colors must be green.
