Batman/Doc Savage preview
I hope this is allowed. One page from the Batman/Doc Savage preview backup in Superman Blackest Night #3.

I was going to add commentary but I think this speaks for itself...

This post keeps up with that pattern.

You are aware tthat Batman's aversion to guns was a construct of the Silver Age.

The Golden Age Batman who would be more in line with the time period for a Doc Savage crossover quite often used guns as seen in the preview.

I'm not saying I want him using guns all the time in the modern age but for a non-canon pulpy story I'm perfectly okay with them.

I´m glad to see I´m not the only one who`s extremely bothered by the idea of Batman firing guns. His strict adherence of the no guns and no killing rule made him someone special and a character you could look up to.
I was very much looking forward to this series, because of the no powers premise and because of Azzarello´s writing. I hope this teaser was misleading.
I miss the real Batman like crazy, but I´m not touching anything that destroys the legend any more.

I'm definitely going to be buying this because of Noto, but didn't Golden Age Batman use guns like twice? I really think Azz is overdoing it.

To my knowledge, he used a handgun that fired silver bullets against the Mad Monk and operated a machine gun against Professor Strange's Monster Men.

But, if you count how many people he's broken their necks, tossed into acid ot thrown out of buildings, he had a bit of a body count on him, even a little bit after Robin showed up.

It's not the guns that bother me. Yes, it goes against the modern Batman ethos but he has been shown with guns before.

It's how he's using them. Look at it! Just standing there pumping lead into the walls. This isn't remotely careful, planned or controlled. It's brash, messy and will leave heaps of evidence. And that many bullets and he doesn't even hit anyone! Any other character and I wouldn't mind so much, but this is Batman.

Agreed. It seems more like a lame action movie than a pulp story.

I'm gonna be honest; I'm more interested in the Doc Savage part of this equation. Batman could be spraying people with Ebola, for all I care.

The first minute of that sums it up, I think. The beauty of Batman is that you can interpret the character in so many different way, and each time he'll still work. He's like a genre chameleon.

I could be Doc Savage wearing Batman's costume.

If not: a Batman dual-wielding pistols is really not my cup of tea.

The whole preview is here:
http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2009/10/21/get-a-first-look-at-the-batmandoc-savage-special-1/

This page is the best of the art. The rest is bleh.

Also, DiDio has stated in his 10 questions and 1 answer on Newsarama a few weeks ago that this is a no-power pulp universe (1 of the 52) where it is a mix of modern and golden age. So if Batman used guns then, then that is fine with me. However, I wonder about the point that he is not being 'controlled' in the page shown. Was the golden age Batman controlled or was he like this? I haven't read any golden age Batman. Also, did he kill anyone? Because Doc Savage, like 'our' Batman is against killing for any reason so it would be interesting watching Batman as the foil this time around.

I bet that's just a guy dressed as Batman and whatever he was doing snooping around that room when he got caught by the waitress will get Doc Savage's attention and bring him to Gotham.

Either way it's not canon so there's that.

Uh, I think people are overreacting a bit here. First off, it's two of the coolest and most iconic characters ever written (in my humble opinion, anyway) teaming up, so I'd say that's certainly worth giving it a chance, even if it DOES bend the rules a bit. Secondly, if this is set in the '30's, it makes perfect sense for Batman to be using guns - Doc Savage pre-dated Superman; his heyday was in the mid-'30's, so if this is set THEN, it's set quite literally before Batman even existed - he was created in '39, a year after Supes. Therefore, a Doc Savage/Batman crossover would HAVE to be set in the early, early days of Batman's career if it were to make any sense - and in those early days, Batman's violent pulp roots were still showing. He had a gatling gun mounted on the Batplane, for crying out loud. Third, it could, as several people have pointed out, very well be an impostor wearing the batsuit, and fourth, THE COMIC HASN'T EVEN COME OUT YET. We don't KNOW what the contect is, and it's not likely we'll find out until we read the actual comic, now is it? I mean, come on, DC knows what they're doing here. They've put up THESE PARTICULAR pages for preview because they know damned well that they're going to get a reaction. People are going to go 'GASP! GUNS! But Batman does not USE guns!', then go out and buy it in droves to see whether their hero has actually jumped the shark. It's the most provocative part of the issue, which is why it's here - if you let yourself be provoked before you've even properly read it, you're playing right into their hands. Be cool - wait and see.

Nice-- they're using 30's/40's Bats-- though I don't think Gun Kata was one of the martial arts he mastered.

I wonder if he also has the water-cooled Lewis machine gun mounted on the Batplane.

The Batman isn't the Shadow. The Shadow (and, oddly, the Phantom) had twin guns. Batman only ever had one.
