Ewww, there some pretty messed up notions in this... of course, it's not helped by the fact that when I saw the cover, I thought Mento was in some sort of low cut basque top...

Aaaaand I'm officially creeped the fuck out. Also, as un-PC as this may be, I wish someone would toss Niles Caulder down a flight of stairs. He's a jerk.

un-PC cause he's in a wheelchair or cause its never good to throw people down the stairs. Not that I'm discouraging the idea, Niles is a supreme jerk!

Bluejaybirdie, I love you, but are you sure that's a cool thing to say? I mean, that's an actual problem for people in wheelchairs, able-bodied people could topple them, it's a bit like, ... idk, gendered violence? I can't think of a good comparison.

Because he's a supremely manipulative sonnofabitch?

I don't think they DO.

But they know he can't be trusted, and generally how he's going to screw with them, so they can generally mitigate his crap.

And he is, undeniably, brilliant, so...

Nothing good.

Now the Metal Men "co-feature," that's a different story.

The rest of the Doom Patrol are facing a sentient black hole that's possessing people's bodies. To defeat it, the Chief wants Mento to use Rita's body as a conduit for a psychic assault against the black hole, which requires first taking over her body.

Just once...just ONCE...I'd like a really smart person in comics not to eventually become a manipulative jerk. Professor X. Brainiac 5. Tony Stark. Reed Richards. (Often oblivious jerk in Reed's case, and I'm not sure which is worse. But he's had his manipulative moments too.) The Chief. The old Chief by Drake voluntarily gave up his life for fourteen "nobodys". The only thing I didn't like about Morrison's run on the DP (which otherwise I thoght was brilliant) is what he eventually revealed about the Chief at the end of the run, which made no sense given the Drake Chief.

From that cover I thought DC made Cabaret into a comic. I would love a superteam from decadent Wiemar Germany...

Y'know what the point was where this lost me entirely? The Chief making fun of Mento's helmet. I REALLY hate it when writers do stuff like that. 'Let's mock the past! Ha ha, they were so LAME back then, except for the parts we liked, and we're going to trash everything else!'
You can't have it both ways, people. If you're going to get rid of your older characters, then get rid of them, but if you're going to keep them, then write them with the same respect they've been given in the past. YES, Mento wears a silly helmet, ha-ha, but that's not the damn POINT. If you want to keep a hero - or any character - viable, DON'T MAKE FUN OF THEM. Treat them with respect. Mento has always been a bit of a scumbag, yes, but one thing he has NOT been is pathetic. Yes, he wears a silly helmet - so what? That's part of his character - if you think his character is stupid, then don't use him.
Basically, what this sort of writing does is pick at the threads of a fictional universe that's been sewn together over the course of decades, and, yes, does not always make perfect sense. But it WORKS - if you suspend your disbelief just a little, it works perfectly fine. It's when you start picking and picking at the threads that it all starts coming unravelled. 'Ha ha, Mento wears a silly helmet!' 'Ha ha, Superman wears his undies outside his tights!' 'Ha ha, Batman doesn't use a gun, the big wimp! He could take down the Joker in five minutes if he'd grow a set of balls!' Shut. UP. Yes, the DCU is full of parts that look a little dubious at times to jaded modern eyes. Yes, it ain't 'the Matrix', all slick and modernized and sterile. So what? That's part of its charm, part of its history. A good writer will find ways to make the old viable again, not make fun of it. The character has survived intact up 'til now, despite his silly helmet - so making fun of it just underlines your own prejudices, instead of revealing anything new or interesting. Leave the damn helmet alone, and concentrate on what WORKS, not what doesn't.

I actually like this. Heroic? Yes, Bastards? yes. Outcasts? definitely. I've always figured it wasn't just their powers but their basic hangups that get the other heroes to shy away from them.

Jesus H. flippin' christ. Doesn't the Doom Patrol have enough problems being the "freaks" of the DC universe, now they're being painted as a bunch of perverts, emotional cripples, and manipulative bastards?
What the fuck, DC? What. The. Fuck.
