Fight!

Some unlettered preview images from X-Men vs. Agents of Atlas #2.

As we saw in issue 1, the Agents stole the X-Men's stuff, so a bunch of X-Men beamed into the Hidden City to take it back.  Picking up:

The X-Men really don't any excuse for losing fights these days, with everybody centralized; they've got, conservatively, about 40 frontline combatants.  They could easily have brought about twice as many characters to this fight.  All they need to do to win a brawl is keeping throwing X-Men at the opponents.

Fantastic art (apart from Namora not having her little ankle-wings).

I really like the rendition of Cyclops' attack there; usually he's doing a sustained blast, here he's just firing a burst.

The rest of the preview is here.

Is Northstar in this thing (or anything really)?

In the X-Men titles, but usually limited to single-panel appearances. Most recent one here, I believe. The blog I linked to does a pretty nifty job of keeping up on Northstar/Alpha Flight cameos.

Thanks, Normally I'd just watch for scans but we go months without a mention around here so I'm not even sure when he's still around. I still can't believe how little they use him, there are so many things he could be doing.

But they do not have a gorilla with a rocket-pack. ;)

But while we're on the subject, do you have any idea what said gorilla is doing to Wolverine?

Looks like sonic disruptor. With Wolverine's enhanced hearing, makes it that much worse.

I thought he was using some kind of magnetic beam on Wolverine's adamantium, but I think you're right -- looks like he just took the edge off of a Fastball Special.

Really? The X-men should really be higher on Osborn's list. Because they are pretty an army of supers, an army with several of the most powerful beings on the planet on the team. The only thing that could make the team more powerful at this point is if Jean came back and brought all the other dead X-men with her.

And that huge team are all pissed at Osborn and his Avengers at the moment. And he's going out of his way to piss some of them off even more.

Don't forget: Barely reigned in insanity + Power Tripping liek WHOA = Norman making enemies like most people bookmark websites.

Add in most of his "allies" being just as nuts as him and/or just waiting for him to fall apart so they can loot the wreckage and that's a recipie for an epic Humiliation Conga.

So this means Marvel will probably have him pawn off the blame on Moonstone or someone and escape back to Europe...

Ironically, my first thought upon seeing this picture was "Dear God, how many X-Men are there?" And then you revealed me that this isn't even half of them. And I thought the JSA was bad...

In this picture here you have: Cyclops, Storm, Emma Frost, Colossus, Surge, Sunspot, Nightcrawler, Iceman, Psylocke, Rockslide, Angel, Wolverine, Beast, Cloak (well, he's there, anyway), and Dagger.

In addition to them, Utopia includes: Professor X, Illyana Rasputin, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Karma, Hellion, Domino, X-23, Warpath, Wolfsbane, Pixie, Mercury, Armour, Gentle, the Stepford Cuckoos, Dr. Nemesis, Madison Jeffries, Dust, Rogue, Anole...hmm, probably missing a few.

Then there's the X-characters who don't at present live on Utopia (such as Jean Grey, the three currently running the Starjammers, or the cast of X-Factor).

Of course, this cast is divided among a number of different books in terms of screentime (it includes, for example, the full casts of New Mutants and X-Force, which are both subgroups of the larger X-team), and most just function as background characters in Uncanny.

I don't know that there was a specific story showing it, but he's been pictured in the background in San Francisco and Utopia (not surprising, really, that he'd take the first flight outta Wakanda, given where Divided We Stand left him).

Is Jeffries sane again? I kind of hated what they did to him in the Weapon X series. Especially after getting treated so badly in the second Alpha Flight series.

The X-Men have one tremendous disadvantage though. They're the X-Men and thus could become overwhelmed by pointless soap-operatic drama at any point.
What? Oh, don't mind me, I'm just here to finally see Cloak & Dagger in action again.

Why the hell is Dagger on the team now? I always thought her powers were more supernatural anyway. I know she has the weird drug experiment gone wrong origin, but they have always played her and Cloak off as street level quasi-mystical types.

Because Osborne said they could join the Dark X-men and then they changed sides with Emma and Namor. They were allowed to stay because they weren't welcome in the outside world either. Flimsy as hell reasoning but we're talking about walking PSAs living with walking racial metaphors logic left a long time ago.

Cloak and Dagger's powers surfaced after the drug experiment, but it was revealed as far back as the 1980's that they had actually both been latent mutants anyway, what was "ironic" was that had their powers developed naturally, HE would have become Dagger and SHE would have been Cloak.

Au contraire. As seen in Utopia, mutants are like ninjas: the more they are, the less effective they are.

Looking at this, I wish Storm wore more clothes. Seriously, she wears less than Emma. (For Emma's recent costumes.) Psylocke at least has a nice practical high neck, and Namora a) is basically wearing what Namor does b) would probably not care if her boob fell out in the middle of combat. She'd probably smack a bitch with it. Storm, though? I wish she had a more practical costume.

Also, I kind of want to see Namora wear Namor's other costume.

As an elemental Storm's powers make her immune to extremes of heat and cold, so anything she wears is more out of consideration for others than any necessity or style. The only exception is her cape, which apparently means that blasting a hurricane up her own ass allows her to fly gracefully.

I guess, but as far as I'm aware, she can still have a wardrobe malfunction. I don't mind Emma so much, because she deliberately in-text dresses sexy to the point of trashy. But Storm's all dignified goddess and queen and so on - so the plunging precarious neckline seems sort of inappropriate, especially when most other people are wearing a fairly covering uniform.

I like her MA costume much better, even if it is awfully like Ms Marvel's.

I predict this fight ends badly for the X-Men when Venus sings, triggering the Gordian Knot of convoluted love triangles, rhombuses, and dodecahedrons that have developed over the years.
