Fourth scan, first panel "Mad? Insane? Me?? How could I be insane when I have my jar of radioactive fossilised snot with me?!"

Scary smiling people are scary...

Yeah, it was looking more like the Joker's secret origin for a minute, there.

GJ is just screwing with the origin for no good reason. I thought Lex killed his parents and used the insurance money to get out of town ?

For a minute there I was worried we'd be seeing a return of the "My hair! Curse you Superman!" origin.

That always bothered me. He's Lex Freaking Luthor. It should have been:

Lex:"My Hair! Curse You Superman"

TWO SECONDS LATER

Lex: "Oh wait! I just cured baldness! Nevermind!"

To be fair, it was more than just losing his hair; the artificial life form and the kryptonite cure he was working on got destroyed.

Also, I think the problem with making Clark Lex's friend and not Superboy is that it can't really affect Lex's relationship with Superman, unless he finds out that Superman is really Clark.

I actually wonder if that cut Lex is getting there is giving him personality changing Kryptonite poisoning, like with Supergil and Alura.

I think I like Smallville Lionel Luthor, he was a bit of a prick even when he was possessed by Jor-El (or his computer embodiment whatever.

On the theory that Geoff Johns tends to leave clues lying around on purpose, I'll point out that Dr. Saul Erdel is the scientist who shows up in the origins of Martian Manhunter.

Now you've got me thinking Johns is planning to do a Martian Manhunter Secret Origins that gets everything wrong and has J'onn only get transported to earth in recent years instead of back in the 50s.

Which makes me want to bop him on the head with a rolled up newspaper. Maybe squirt some water in his face while going "No! Bad writer!"

You know, I'm far from beholden to John Byrne's Man of Steel reboot, but it says very bad things about both the writing and the art that it's impossible for me to read young!Lex's dialogue here without hearing it in the voice of The Monarch.

Man.
If I didn't know better, I'd be sure that second scan had Buzz in it. You know, Linda Danvers' demon-ex? That one time he got all dressed up and met her parents, he looked just like Lex does in that second scan. Distracting!

I really like this, but the presence of Gary Frank goes a long way toward that.

And Johns sneaks in yet another arm injury, when Clark breaks Pete Ross' arm right at the start! JOHNS, WHAT IS IT WITH YOU AND ARMS?
