Amazing Spider-Man: The Gauntlet Sketchbook

This is from the free Amazing Spider-Man: The Gauntlet Sketchbook.

I'm a bit worried about what they mean by Rhino's tragic last stand...

But I LIKED Sandman as a sort of good guy...*sigh*. Electro's new look just makes me think of Bullseye with the whole, "Let's just put his mask on his face" thing. Hrm. Well, gotta wait for the actual story till I can actually complain. lol. I will say that I do like the cover with Spidey in the grave surrounded by all the villain stuff and I really like the splash page from #600, especially what I am assuming is Kraven in the bottom corner.

By the way, anyone know what Mysterio they are using? Cause there's the one that killed himself, the second one that I know nothing about, and then the teleporter guy that was introduced in the Black Cat/Spidey series.

Also, who wears black boots like the ones in the cover of Spidey in the grave? Black Cat? Gwen Stacy (Argh, please no.)?

I'm just as concerned with "and it's all going to be Spider-Man's fault!"

Anyone who thinks that Spider-Man should ONLY make mistakes needs to be banned from reading or buying any comic book ever again for the rest of their lives.

Every single thing that Spider-Man has done since the start of "Brand New Day" has been a total failure and made the lives of everyone around him significantly worse.

Which is one of the reasons, besides the whole rape-for-laughs thing, that I utterly despised the Chameleon story arc, because aside from his shocking cruelty to Flash and Mary Jane, the writers went out of their way to show that the Chameleon was a better Peter Parker than the real thing.

That's not funny - that just underscores precisely why I hate the current portrayal of the character, because everyone is writing him as though J. Jonah Jameson was right about him all along.

Actually, the thing I've been wondering regarding OMD is if Electro's still bisexual? I mean, they wiped away the Spider-marriage, who the hell knows what they've done to Electro in the process.

To be fair, the only time Electro was shown as bisexual was in that scene from Millar's run where he was talking to the shape-shifting prostitute.

It's only going to be a matter of time before their original goofy looks are returned. I mean, Electro has been redesigned how many times now?

I liked the look they gave him in the last "Spideys villians gets upgraded" storyarch. There whas this black suit with thunderbolt flaps all over the hood that flared out in classic style when he used the powers.

It whas just cool.

I think in that same story he'd also learned to control his powers better and fired metal scraps as a railgun and what not.

What I find ironic ...
[info]box_in_the_box
2009-09-25 07:51 pm UTC (link)
... Is that, on the one hand, we have Marvel bringing back Harry and undoing the marriage and erasing everyone's knowledge of Peter's secret identity, and even making sure to make the Osborn hair look more ridiculously "traditional" than ever before, because OMG WE MUST RESTORE EVERYTHING TO THE CLASSIC STATUS QUO, but then, on the other hand, we have May getting married to Jonah's dad, Doc Ock becoming a living dead cyborg, Jonah getting elected mayor of NYC, a shitload of new characters and new looks for half the old characters.

I mean, do they truly not realize that they're creating their own backlash EVEN AMONG THE TRADITIONALISTS??? Or are they seriously so deluded that, even after THEMSELVES setting a precedent for undoing DECADES of the character's history with MAGIC, that they can FORCE their OWN changes to become PERMANENT???

A lot of the art is quite good. I kind of like the new Electro look (not that you really have to do much to improve over "Sunflower Man").

But seriously.

"The classic rogues are back, and this time they're all naked!" Yea, just what I wanted to picture. Vulture, naked. Lizard, naked. Etc. Blech.

And looky there, Arana's getting caught up in the Spider-Man story.

That poor kid, she was better off with the Initiative.

I will be so fucking pissed if Araña gets fridged because of this! Seriously Marvel has a good character with her and so far it's been a wasted potential. Poor Jessica has to deal with Spidey's shit even though her being Spider-Woman had nothing to do with Peter being Spider-Man and them both having Spider in their name is just a coincidence.

It looks like one of the villains is going to be a woman (the person holding Araña and I guess the same person sitting in Kraven's grave) and I just hope she's not Gwen revived or a Gwen clone or anything related to Gwen Stacy! Because that's getting old and they should really let her RIP.

But what really bums me is Sandman being evil again, seriously WTF I liked him as a good guy and I guess in comic world once you're a villain you're always villain! Everyone better watch out for Hawkeye because you know he's bound to turn evil anytime soon!

At least they are acknowledging that Araña exists again. I haven't seen anything featuring her since Civil War.

Does anybody else think that Electro looks like Cole from inFamous?

On another note, I'm willing to give this a try if it means the spidey-harem gets dropped.

Is anyone else getting a "Batman: Knightfall" vibe from of this storyline? Essentially, what it looks like we're having here is the hero gets attacked by members of his rogues gallery one after the other and, as a result, gets so physically exhausted that the new villain comes in and nearly defeats him. The only difference here, I think, is that it's not a coordinated effort by the villain under a mastermind, merely that the new villain in question just takes the opportunity of Spidey's weakened condition to strike. And I believe the new villain, or villains in this case, are Kraven the Hunter's first wife and their daughter, Ana (the same characters from Guggenheim's "Kraven's First Hunt" arc) and based on that first image from issue #600, it looks like their "Spider-Hunt" might have something to do with not only getting revenge on Spider-Man but also bringing back the original Kraven as well.

And yeah, I predict the following: that Ana is going to kill or capture Arana; Electro will destory the Daily Bugle in his battle with Spider-Man leaving Peter having to help Betty look for a new job; Sandman becomes a villain because his Spidey accidentally causes his "daugther" (that girl shown on with Sandman on that one cover) to "die" who probably is a sentient sand being similar to that New Batman Adventures episode where Clayface created a little girl to be his scout; and the Rhino battles and kills a new Rhino, but at the cost of dying himself; and that Spidey will wind up in two relationships at the same time, one with Black Cat as Spider-Man and another as Peter with someone else (probably with Michele of all people) but later winds up having a night of sympathy sex with MJ.

Regarding Arana's fate (please don't kill her, please don't kill her), I'm still wondering why writers and editors have againts young super heroes. New Warriors, X-Kids, Teen Titans: young teams have a mortality rate only surpassed by X-STatic and the GLA.

This REALLY doesen't sound like a good idea. Part of what I love about Spidey's rogue's gallery is that most of them are actually semi-likeable in some form.

Okay, a new look for Electro is way overdue if they want to play him for anything but laughs (although black leather *and* khaki shorts? Where's Tim Gunn when you need him?), but the thing about him not being able to touch people because of his out-of-control electricity powers? How creatively bankrupt do you have to be to swipe ideas from James Cameron's old Spider-Man treatment?

What...the fuck?

Normally, I really don't get involved with the BND!Spidey stuff. I don't like it, it makes me sigh and shake my head in disgust and bafflement, but at the end of the day, as long as Mary Jane is okay, I don't care. But hinting at the possibility of Araña being killed? Araña? My favorite of all the people associated with spiders?

My inner-angry nerd is howling with white-hot fury.
