For a moment, Felix was caught in the way this man looked at her. She felt a bit like a bug pinned to a display board, under the lights. Felix's breath caught in her chest as she waited, and what was probably only a second or two felt longer.
Then he reacted. He got up, chucked his coffee, and approached. When the man first started to head her way, Felix felt a little bolt of fear race through her. People could be unpredictable, and there was also something inherently intense about him. She wasn't sure what to expect, but then he walked right past her and spoke to the barista in a very commanding voice. On her behalf.
Felix couldn't help it. A flattered little smile momentarily warmed her face, but she quickly settled her features back into something neutral, hoping he hadn't noticed. It was nice of him, but she hadn't needed him to step in.
"It wasn't that big of a deal," Felix said, her voice low. She watched surreptitiously to make sure the barista didn't spit in her coffee or something. "But thanks."
She usually avoided confrontations. Felix knew she had a bit of a temper, and she didn't want to let it loose accidentally, so she just tried to distance herself from situations that might cause her to get worked up. If someone else felt like going to bat for her, though, she wasn't about to stop him. Besides, apple turnovers were a favorite of hers, and he'd somehow snagged two of those as well.
It would be rude not to stay and eat it with him, she figured, if that was his intention with requesting two of them.
"Here I thought chivalry was dead," Felix added in a deadpan, a teeny smirk sneaking onto her face.
