Simon and Shima had the benefit of elemental powers to keep the tendrils at bay, but Vance had little more than his fists which were the exact opposite of helpful if one of the shadows snared him. As usual, he had to make use of his environment, but was overtly cautious of what he used (he'd been in trouble far too often for using light posts as giant bats). The tendrils and shadows seemed only interested in the living, so he easily picked up a manhole cover and pushed towards the epicenter of activity.
While the others kept fighting, he knew he had to reach Mink. He could count on his teammates to handle everything else - they were competent men - but this was his friend and no one else was going to reach him first. Vance didn't know what he was going to do when he actually reached him, had no way of telling if the cluster of tendrils would overpower him first or if he could free Mink from them, but he had to try.
