Teddy could barely wait for the last bell to ring that Friday to signal classes were done. His right knee bouncing so hard that it was practically vibrating under his desk from partially sleep deprived, restless anticipation. His mind never holding any doubt that their plan to make a great escape was not only going to work but it would give him time to fix this; a growing knot of unease that was slowly eating up his insides as the shit that normally clung to their fair city started growing fangs and hissing. But at that moment he didn’t let his thoughts delve any deeper than shifting enough of his atoms so that he wasn’t pounding out a drum beat against the hardtop he was currently half bent over. Elbows pressing bruises as he leaned closer still from his seat in the third row to stare down his enemy. All subtlety left behind more than half an hour ago, which was fine considering the substitute teacher for the class seemed to want to be here even less than he did. Dark eyes zeroed in on the second hand of the clock hanging just above the white board that had once been an eager cheerleader for his upcoming freedom, but now taunted him with its treacherously methodical tick tock tick.
The teen silently wished again that they could have all ditched this morning, but there were enough parental figures buying into the back story that Teddy knew they couldn’t chance an errant call from the school for missing class. While he was the resident King of Cons these days, Teddy taking especial pride in just how well Izzie’s fake passport had turned out even if she hadn’t been too thrilled with the name Eloisa Aldermann, he didn’t want to push his luck any further. The hardest task already done in convincing Ian’s dad that they needed some time away to do a ‘research for a paper’ and ‘didn’t you say some of the best times in your early education was when you were out experiencing rather than just reading about it?’ The MacNabs were no fools, but honestly Teddy thought that worked to their advantage because they knew better than most what kind of turn NW was taking. So when they got the green light Teddy crowed at their mad skillz and then made damn sure that everything else was ready because the truth or the matter was that he needed a break from this city. The one he’d always planned on leaving without a second glance but now held so many people that actually mattered to him. People that could get hurt by the things everyone dreaded might be coming.
So while he was looking forward to spending time with his friends and possible making a new one, the teen needed the escape more than anything. Maybe even just to see if there was any pull left in him to come back when the their weekend was said and done. But he kept those thoughts to himself as the last second passed and the bell finally rang. Teddy phasing to get where he was going faster with a small grin spreading over his face as he cut a trail back to the NKN dorm where they would be meeting. His side of his dorm room littered with the extra bags they’d deposited there over the last half of the week. Excitement drumming through his blood and pounding out whatever residual doubts he had because it didn’t matter what each of their reasons were for going. All of that was background noise for what would be the greatest weekend EVER.
A thought that was only re-solidified an hour later as they all stood close, unconsciously huddling for warmth in the crisp, freezing air in front of the more than impressive Hotel Firefly. The log cabin-like exterior coupled with strategic outside lighting adding an indescribable warmth to the place. A perfect haven amid a picturesque landscape and a white capped mountain line. The snow as white as picture books about Christmas and fairy tales that seemed so quiet and yet full a life. The world outside of this place could be falling apart and crashing down around there heads, but nothing mattered more at this moment then one simple fact.
