Out of all the construction going on in the district of Old Utopia, the Conference Center stands out like a shiny quarter in the middle of a grungy sidewalk. A modern architectural model, it’s the newest and largest building in the area, standing on the borders of Wight with a view towards the New Waverly Airport. The hundreds of thousands of square feet of rooms and lecture centers are meant to host a multitude of events, from corporate conventions to elegant weddings, but today for its grand opening, the Center is open to the public. Within reason, of course, as Adalina Schellenger’s security force keeps an eye out as best as they can for potential troublemakers. But don’t worry too much if you’re superhuman - no blood test is required to enter. Shuttle buses arrive by the droves, spilling out hordes of passengers of all ages onto the long stretch of walkway to the entrance. Once inside the lobby, one notices that virtually across every surface, screens and projections are posted everywhere, splashing advertisements and sneak peeks for the various companies that have come for the Expo. Conference Center attendants pass out pamphlets and maps, masterfully herding the crowds to the various sections. And then through several pairs of double doors, the lobby leads out to the vast area of the main floor, filled wall to wall with booths, tables, and people. Demonstrations are going on all over the place: learning labs devoted to computers and digital technologies, interactive touch-screen displays with information on various technical innovations, the newest devices and products from phones to video games, advanced robotics and 3D printers, and - because this is Magnus's specialty - sections devoted to biomedical wonders. There are prototypes of synthetic organs and limbs, rudimentary neural-to-computer interfaces, and demonstrations of biological augmentations that could in a few short years be released to the public: enhancing quality of life for all. The man of the hour, Dr. David Magnus himself, opens the convention with a welcoming speech while standing on a stage in the center of the main floor. Dressed in a plain, but excellent quality suit, his face appears for a few minutes across all of the screens while he speaks, his signature goofy smile stretched wide and his blue eyes seeming larger and brighter than normal. He speaks of the promising future with sweeping gestures, and he mentions briefly how inspired he is by his brilliant children, Vox and Violet, whose pictures flash up before they are replaced again by their grinning father. His energy seems almost manic, over-the-top, hectic. At the end of his speech, Magnus gives a few last words as a blast of confetti falls from the ceiling: "WELCOME to the Tech Expo!" |
