Ethan wouldn’t say that lately his track record for nightly activity had been less than stellar exactly, but the fact of the matter was that the thief’s wallet, personal not stolen, was getting celeb-status anorexic. His day job of changing tires and working over transmissions hardly ever paying enough to pay rent let alone cover the utilities it took to reheat a month’s worth of burritos. Which was all kinds of pathetic, but what Ethan had learned early on in the thieving game was that if you didn’t have any friends the next best thing were co-workers. Especially when you needed an impromptu alibi or character reference should a near miss on a midnight jaunt somehow throw suspicion at your doorstep. Cause while not wearing a mask was probably one of his biggest offenses to the criminal lifestyle, Ethan loved the thrill of it. The challenge it took to be quick and crafty and show that he was one of best damn thieves in the business right now. Plus it wasn’t like Ethan didn’t have a plan B for when he couldn’t get an invisibility cloak up fast enough. A gun tucked securely into the back of his jeans and the number of a friendly, neighborhood psychopath on his speed dial.
So while pick-pocketing through some of the higher end districts had helped Ethan get by tonight he needed a good payday to square everything off for May and maybe add on to his ‘get the hell out of dodge’ rainy day fund. The light manipulator dressing in black before exiting his home and melting into the background shadows. Already having a certain apartment complex in mind that he’d been scouting for the last week. Learning all the exits points and the level of security throughout the building. Adrenaline starting to bleed into his veins as he eyed the drain pipe leading up to the third floor. Definitely not the safest route, but damn if it wasn’t fun as he pulled himself up higher. The main Indiana Jones theme song blaring through his mind, faintly whistling along as he went before his hand reached the right windowsill.
Once inside Ethan checked to make sure the apartment was as empty as he’d suspected before he started his routine. Searching for the typical sweet spots where dumb people usually left their shit and the smarter ones tried to hide it. Slowly filling his messenger bag with expensive jewelry, watches and other high end items. Eventually scoring through the whole bedroom of what looked to be a young married couple before he considered his work done. Checking his watch and clocking the whole job in at just under seven minutes before he turned back to the door. Already mentally planning which apartment to hit next before his thought was sidelined by an obnoxious voice tied to none other than his baby nemesis, Captain Killjoy, and all Ethan could think of for a second was really? REALLY??
So instead of answering stupid questions he laughed outright and probably just a fraction under too loud at his luck. Not bothering for any of his quick light tricks cause that’s how unintimidated Ethan was as he leaned forward briefly, hands on his knees until he caught a breath and stood up straight. Wiping a pretend tear from his eye as he said, “Damn Cap. You are learning a few things from me. For a second there I thought I had something to worry about.”
