It was true, when he took the menu from her he looked over it with an eye of cheap scrutiny. Not only was it nicer to get cheaper things but the more cheap you went the more quantity you could get and that meant more to go around for the others. "Yeah, thank you."
Normally people just brought food or gave them money, this was the first time he'd actually gone to a place with someone. It was way more awkward than getting money thrown in a hat. He finally decided on something and tilted the menu for her to see "How about a couple of these?" this was painfully awkward. He kind of wanted to just run away right now. This lady was really nice and he didn't want to take from her too much. All of that was written so plainly on his face. His embarrassment and sheepishness.
Once they had all the food in bags he turned to walk out of the place with her. He didn't know that the bag he was holding had a rip in it, though, slowly being tugged on by the sharp edge of one of the aluminum foil packets inside. They wouldn't have gotten very far out of the place - with christian emphasizing his thanks and feeling extra guilty about what she'd bought them - before the bag opened up enough along the side that a burrito, safely wrapped up, slipped from it.
Christian stumbled and went to reach for it in a frenzy as it fell but there was that moment's spike of shock and adrenaline as something unexpected happened.
