Like the 4th of July, New Year's Eve was a party for most everyone but Sam. He had tried to go by Evren's place, if only to sneak over and say hi for a few minutes, but he was out. It was probably better that way, even if he was disappointed. There would be other occasions. To his fortune, the 54th knew that Lattinger had difficulties with PTSD. Though much of Sam's backstory had been shifted to accommodate his undercover identity, Marine service had been the one thing that he and his alternate identity had in common. So when he was booked for patrol, he was sent to one of the corners of Stagnes, a small area littered with apartment complexes and townhouses that had requested to remain a No Fireworks zone. Sam wasn't a stalker. He knew Siobhan lived in this neighborhood out of necessity. When he couldn't feasibly contact her any other way about her brother, he left messages in her mailbox. Any easy drive-by delivery that took two seconds at most and didn't incur any suspicion. Their ability to meet in person was often derailed by his job, and when that man died in his arms a few weeks ago, a man who had lost his life trying to save an officer, Sam had shut himself down. There wasn't much he could say and he didn't know how to speak up. He couldn't. It was the job. But for a moment, he thought, if he could stop by and say hello, he could risk five minutes, yes? Staying would be dangerous, stupid, but he needed some contact, some grounding, after that event. Just a touch, like a hand into a fire, and out again before the flames seared his skin. Enough for the ghost of heat. A moment of life. |
