Everything felt heavy. I failed him. Small, whisp-like, slipping in between other thoughts and disappearing again before he could catch it and reprimand himself. I failed him. But it wasn't about Vance, not really. It wasn't about Lora or Alice or anyone else Christian had known in his time here. The boy had done everything he could because that was who he was. And no amount of influence could have stopped him from what Vance would later learn defined his heroic heart. Christian was too young to die. Too full of life, all irony aside. Had too much he had yet to experience. He spoke on the phone with Siobhan and let her talk out her feelings. He couldn't get in contact with Lora and felt perhaps it was better that way. Maybe he didn't really, but it hadn't left him with much choice. When he was told to go question the girl - Caleigh Danvers - by his superiors, he felt like he was waltzing into a situation where he wasn't needed. But they paid the bills. So he went. At the hospital, Vance spoke with some of the doctors. He wanted to be sure she was briefed as to the intentions of his arrival, wanted to make sure she was in fair condition health-wise, and wanted it to be known that she had the right to refuse his presence at any time, higher ups be damned. And then he entered the room. Caleigh was awake but ghastly pale and bandaged. The weight he had felt coming here, it flooded this room. It permeated every corner of it. "Hi, Caleigh. I'm Vance." He introduced himself calmly, softly. He wasn't sure if Caleigh knew that he'd been a...friend? of Christian's, so he wasn't going to pretend he did. "I'm going to ask you a few questions, is that okay?" |
