The Gala at Breckley’s Plaza was an unconventional event headed by an even more unconventional woman. It was part carnival, part Oscars afterparty, part concert hall and one hundred percent unlike anything anybody in New Waverly had seen before. Separated into two great halls, the Plaza boasted plenty of space for the denizens of the city to pile in, with only the requirement that they dressed appropriately for the occasion and that they didn’t carry weapons (it wasn’t like security looked that closely, though). But only select types of characters really chose to come out on a night like this - those who were huge fans of Adiós Sandoval, those who were powered and comfortable announcing that, or those who were superhuman-friendly. It was a giant risk to have so many gathered in one place with a city already divided over its opinion of the superhumans, and many of those with the negative opinions belonged to gangs or criminal organizations. It was a wonder Omicron didn’t make an appearance. But the doors opened at seven sharp and crowds of people flooded in to be greeted by servers carrying trays of wine flutes and unpronounceable foods. The first hall was lined with buffet tables, a great chandelier dangling above a massive staircase to illuminate a room meant more for casual meandering and chatting. Once one ascended the staircase to cross into the second hall, they were greeted with a much more vibrant atmosphere: one with a determined stage against the back wall, the center of the floor cleared for dancing. Until Adiós’ performance began at ten o’clock sharp, the live music on the stage performed classics of Chopin, Mozart, Rachmaninoff. To the sides were rows of well-decorated tables, each with its own great centerpiece of white flowers and pearls. It was, surprisingly, a well put-together function. And Adiós Sandoval observed her arrivals from the great staircase, arms spread wide and chin tilted skyward, as if to silently and egotistically announce, “Welcome to my Gala!” |
