It wasn’t necessarily that Sky was opposed to going to the flea market. Just that she’d never really had a reason to go. Her parents weren’t the kind of people who frequented that sort of place, and had she ever mentioned she was interested in going to either of them, they would have been appalled and tried their best to talk her out of it. As it was, Sky had no intention of telling them, not because she was ashamed about going to the flea market, more because she didn’t want to listen to them pull out all their excuses as to why such places were beneath them. Really, Sky didn’t share their feelings, at least not in a way she was aware of. On average she tended to frequent higher end places to shop, only occasionally stepping in to peruse what was being sold in some of the more affordable stores.
Truthfully, had she not met Lizzy at the speed dating event, Sky likely never would have ventured to the flea market. That she was there now, walking slowly between the various stalls, had everything to do with her then date’s having mentioned working there. Naturally, once she’d learn that this was how Lizzy took care of her family, a sister, Sky had immediately felt it would be too rude of her to not accept the invitation to check out the flea market. She’d been planning to go the weekend before, but the city had fallen apart during the blackout, Sky herself being hospitalized briefly for injuries she’d received during a fight. But now that she was feeling better, she was determined to become a patron of one Lizzy Evans.
The more she walked, the more Sky realized that perhaps she shared a little more of her parents’ prejudices than she thought. Each stall having some reason or another for her to not actually go near it as she peered inside, looking for Lizzy’s familiar face. She kept reasoning that it was simply because she didn’t need anything. That while that picture looked rather nice, it wouldn’t go with her house. Or that blouse was fairly attractive, but not a color that would look good on her. It crossed her mind that she could shop for other people, but the idea of giving someone something that had been previously used - as she assumed everything being sold had been - didn’t sit well with her. And that bothered her, because she’d never really thought she was so like her parents in that respect.
When Sky finally came across Lizzy’s stall, she couldn’t help but feel relieved, at the same time she felt guilty for feeling it in the first place. She waited until she had caught Lizzy’s attention and waved, stepping into the stall. “Hey!” she said, with a smile that was sunny and genuine, “I hope you remember me! Sky? I told you I’d come by, see what you had.”
