NOTE: If anyone knows of Felix's weather abilities (*cough* Vance or Elijah), then I guess I should say there was a little teeny tiny lightning bolt in Haven here. If that would catch anyone's attention at all. Sorry, not sorry.
The power had gone out on Thursday morning, while Felix was at work with Ciara. After a few hours, it had become clear that the power wasn't coming back on any time soon, and when Felix had seen the state of the streets in Ryde Hall--cars stopped everywhere, traffic backed up, streetlights all off--she decided to risk leaving her car parked at the Boombox Cafe and walk home. She doubted she'd get anywhere driving, and she just really wanted to be home and safe. The memories of what had happened the last time the city had devolved into chaos were always too close to the surface for Felix. Her hands were already shaking with the 'what ifs', and she wasted no time setting off for home on foot.
It was a long walk from Ryde Hall to Isle. She'd managed, somehow, to make it through Ryde Hall, through a few blocks of St. Bats, StAgnes, and Wight. That part was relatively easy and uneventful. She knew her way around those areas well enough, because she worked in Ryde Hall and Keyes Campus was in StAgnes. She was familiar with the shortcuts there. The closer Felix got to Haven, however, the more her nerves acted up. She'd already tried her cell phone a million times by then--Vance, Elijah, Vance, Vance, Vance--but it wasn't working. She was familiar with Haven too because she spent some time there under normal circumstances. Under these circumstances, Felix was less certain she could handle Haven alone. Not that she had a choice. Walking around Haven by going through Danton and Rivadale would add too much distance.
With no sign of power, and plenty of growing unrest even though it was still only mid-morning, Felix kept her head down and walked fast through Haven. Running would catch too much attention, and even as it was, Felix had to use her wind to blow a few groups of people away from her. Broad daylight and barely after ten in the morning, and the crime was already starting. Good old Haven.
Just keep going, Felix told herself. Keep going and don't let anyone get close.
Somehow, Felix made it back home to Elijah's place in Isle. Vance and Elijah were glad she was safe, and of course had to be in the field. They were needed because they were trained superheroes, and Felix was just going to stay home and stay safe. There was a reason she hadn't joined any superhero teams, and this was it. She wasn't good in dangerous situations. She didn't think well.
So she stayed locked inside, but that meant being home alone, worrying about Vance and Elijah. And Ciara. Felix and Ciara had agreed to text each other that they were safe, but of course, Felix had since discovered the phones weren't working. There was no way to get in touch. Felix couldn't help but wonder if she'd made it okay. Ciara lived in a suite with JC back in in Ryde Hall, Felix knew. That's how Felix had met JC, so Ciara hadn't had far to go from Boombox to home. Felix tried to tell herself the girl must have made it. If Felix had made it all the way to Isle, then Ciara had to have gotten the few blocks home. It made sense. Felix still worried, about everything and everyone.
Felix didn't sleep much Thursday night. She just lay very still and listened to the sounds of the powerless city outside of her window. Friday, the power was still out. Friday, Vance and Elijah were still fighting. Friday, Felix was still alone.
She climbed up onto the roof and watched the city, thanking the long reach of her weather manipulation abilities that she could still help marginally from a distance, where she didn't have to take any ownership for her actions because it wasn't obvious who was controlling the weather or from where. She dispersed angry mobs with gusts of wind, rained on any flames or smoke she could see. She did what she could. After all, she could reach Haven from her home in Isle, even if she couldn't really see what she was doing from that distance.
It wasn't enough. Even though Vance checked in with her as often as he could, by Friday night, she was still alone. He was still fighting. She was still worried. She couldn't just sit there and wait while every person she knew was out in the city in danger. Her anxiety had been high since Thursday, and just kept creeping up.
When Felix heard noises close by, she lost it. She couldn't stay there anymore just waiting. It wasn't safe out in the city, but it wasn't safe anywhere. She'd stayed and hidden last time this had happened in the city, and her parents had ended up dead.
"Inaction is just as dangerous as action," Felix whispered to herself. A mantra to break paralysis, to halt anxiety. Not that it ever worked. Still, she wrote that on a piece of paper, with a bit more of an explanation. The note she left for Vance and Elijah, in case they came home while she was gone, read:
