It was one of those really snow days that had Elizabeth sitting in the office she was given at the base for event planning with little earbuds in as she flipped through some pictures. She’d been muttering to music as it continued to flip from song to song.
As Tom Petty came on, she found herself starting to sing a little bit louder before eventually belting out. “AND I’M FREE! FREE FALLIN.’”
Kirk wanted to do something nice for his fellow diplomats and some of the other lesser recognized positions in Atlantis. It must be the Captain in him, leftover from his time in Starfleet, but he knew a good morale booster could do wonders. Nothing overly fancy, just a nice dinner maybe in May where they could bring significant others and maybe even children, if it was more casual.
He paused outside Elizabeth’s office and smiled as he heard her singing one of his favorite pieces of classical music, though it was a tad offkey. Not too bad, just a little. She had a rather nice voice, to be honest. But he also knew it could be embarrassing to be walked in on your own private concert so he knocked on the door loudly before popping his head in and waving in case the knock hadn’t gotten her attention.
Startled by the moving hands El shut her mouth quickly and waved her hand nearly knocking over a stack of papers, luckily she just moved the top sheet and was able to catch it and put it back safely.
“Sorry, I was,” El paused with a small laugh. “I guess I was just singing to myself. What brings you by?”
Kirk grinned. He himself was guilty of belting out classic rock and classic rap when he was bored, if he wasn’t simply playing it in his office. He was pretty sure if Atlanteans in the vicinity hadn’t heard of the Beastie Boys before, they probably knew half their discography by heart now, as loudly as he played their songs.
“I was thinking of doing something nice for some of the diplomatic crew and maybe a few other less recognized admin personnel and their families,” he said. “And I figured it’d be worth taking advantage of an event planner’s services since you’re here.”
“Were you thinking a more formal party or something a little bit less formal?” El asked as she smiled. “I think they’d really enjoy that.” She added knowing that those that went into the field tended to be the ones that were the most noticed. “Something outside, weather permitting might be a nice change for everyone as well.” She said pulling out some pictures of spaces around Atlantis that could work.
“I’m thinking less formal. With the weather being weird, I think outside with a place to go indoors if needed might do the trick.” He started looking at the things she was pulling out and studied each location. “Is there anything you think would be good if we had kids around?”
“We can always work with some of the magic users to make it possible for the outdoors,” El suggested, she’d done that for one of the weddings she’d worked on here already and was impressed at how well it worked. “There are a lot of options here, bouncy castles, face painting, games.”
“I think that could be good,” Kirk said with a smile. “And...all of it sounds really good. I think even the older kids could enjoy all that. He tilted his head and thought for a moment. “Maybe we can even have a stage magician or something?”
“As long as there aren’t any clowns, I think we’ll be good,” Elizabeth said carefully. “There are enough people around here who really don’t like them, wouldn’t want to freak them out, but I’m sure there is someone around here that could do something for entertainment.” She added the note to the paper in front of her. “Any kind of food you want?”
The conversation continued on as they worked out everything they wanted for the party.
