It wasn’t often that Emily came down to the gym anymore, but sometimes she had the urge to go for a swim. Swimming laps did wonders for clearing her head and making life in Atlantis not feel so strange all of the time. She didn’t long for the water nearly as much as she did back in high school, but ever since the memories from home came back a while ago, she’d missed things that were familiar no matter how much she did truly love her life her now and the people in it. As soon as she’d climbed out of the pool, she knew that she was rusty. Her arms ached a bit from the long laps that she probably took a little too fast, and she easily could have stopped two or three laps ago too. Her shoulder was going to pay for it tomorrow, but right now the burn in her muscles felt really good. She took a quick, hot shower to ease some of the soreness, and didn’t bother drying her hair once she’d gotten dried off and dressed. Emily had grabbed her bag and was checking on a message she’d gotten from Sara when she headed for the exit and nearly bumped into someone coming into the locker room. “Oh, I’m so sorry! I should probably pay attention to where I’m going.” “Don’t worry about it. It should have been watching, too,” Bonnie said, shaking her head. It was lucky they’d managed to avoid a real collision, since Bonnie had been in her own head and not paying as much attention as she should have been. Participating in the olympics had reminded her how much she missed that kind of activity. The epiphany had brought her to the gym for a workout. She’d done well in the competition, but she recognized she was a little out of shape. “I guess that’ll teach me to try walking and thinking at the same time, huh?” Emily smiled and held up her phone as the culprit and reason for her own distraction. Or she could easily blame Sara because her friend was totally a distraction from time to time. A really good distraction to have though. She laughed a little. “I think it’s something we both can probably work on.” She pulled a hair tie out of her pocket and wrapped up her damp hair to get it off of her neck and clothes. “I’m Emily, by the way. I know we’ve seen each other around, but I don’t think we’ve ever officially met.” “Bonnie.” She reached out a hand to shake Emily’s, offering her a smiles. “So, no phones or thinking while walking, probably a better plan,” she quipped, only half serious. Usually she was good at that whole walking thing. “You work at the coffee place, right?” she asked, tilting her head to the side. Bonnie liked her coffee and she’d been in there more than a few times, so she’d definitely seen her around there, even if they’d never talked before today. Emily nodded. “Yep, that’s me. Today is one of the rare days that I don’t smell like coffee grounds all day long.” She grinned. The smell was pretty much in all of her clothes, and often her hair smelled like it even after taking a long, hot shower. “We’ve been pretty busy lately with all of the snow, cold weather, and of course the holiday drinks.” They didn’t just stop at Christmas. Oh no. There were Valentine’s and St. Paddy’s Day themed ones too. “You work in the magic department, yeah?” Emily was pretty sure Bonnie was one of the witches from one of the worlds with vampires, werewolves, and everything else, but even though she’d been here for months, most of that stuff still went way above her head. Sara came from a world with people who had special abilities, but even that didn’t include things like vampires. “I can think of worse smells,” Bonnie admitted with a grin. The smell of coffee was one of her favorites, even if she could see how it might get old for someone who worked around it all day. That was probably true no matter what you did for a living. Nodding at Bonnie’s question, she shifted her gym bag a little more securely on her arm. “Magic specialist, yeah,” she admitted, pausing just a moment before she was compelled to issue an invitation. “Do you maybe want to go get something to eat?” she asked. “I don’t know about you, but I’m always starving after a good workout.” “That’s really cool,” she said. “Where I’m from, there isn’t magic of any kind, so I’m still learning here and there about the different kinds of powers and things that people have from their own worlds.” There was a lot to keep track of that was for sure. Emily smiled and gave a nod in response. “I’d really like that. Swimming always makes me super hungry too,” she said. “Did you have a craving for anything in particular? I could go for a good pizza or a burger.” “Pizza sounds great to me,” Bonnie agreed with a grin. “I can tell you more about magic if you want, too.” Bonnie had heard stories about magic from her Grams long before she’d known it was really real and that she was an actual witch. It was hard to imagine being from a world like Emily’s where the supernatural really didn’t exist. It was actually kind of amazing how well Emily had adjusted to finding out it was all real. “That would be great!” Emily said, a little excited to learn more about all of the different types of magic and the general supernatural weirdness that came with being in Atlantis. “I know I’ll never be able to learn it all, but having a better idea of what’s out there can only be a good thing, yeah?” Emily smiled and picked up her gym bag again as they started to head out. She could feel a couple of rumbles in her stomach which wasn’t much of a surprise since she usually felt pretty hungry after a good, long swim. |
