Molly had to admit, as much as she had enjoyed stretching her wings and practicing medicine, it was wonderful going back to forensic pathology. She knew it sounded morbid, as Barry had pointed out in her post to the community of Atlantis at large, but it did feel nice to have her hands in a body, especially since she’d been asked to show her skills for some of the Atlantean citizens. Teaching and pathology was the best decision for her as far as she was concerned. And it was also nice to be involved with an element of law enforcement again. She knew the first time she had gone home she really hadn’t lived through as much time as she did this last time, and therefore it was easier to slide back into medicine again. But she’d lived through watching Sherlock self-destruct and taking care of him had reminded her there were aspects of medical care she wasn’t fond of. And...well, her feelings towards Sherlock were more conflicted, now that she had endured his call from Sherrinford. She loved him, she did, and she always would, but she knew he didn’t have her heart the way he had before. Even if she had appeared buoyantly happy in the end credits, she was far happier with Leonard, and when she saw the coin again she had grabbed it without a moment’s hesitation. Sherlock would have her love, always, but Leonard had her heart, and that was far more important. Today, though, she’d been pulled away from dead bodies as well as wedding thoughts for a meeting between forensic sciences staff and the police. Nothing major, just a reintroduction among everyone since Kate had left when she did and she’d become the resident pathologist on her return. But she felt, in the end, she should extend an offer for good quality coffee before everyone went back to work, for whoever wanted to take her up on it. “Sure, I like coffee,” Barry had agreed easily enough to Molly’s invitation. He didn’t know the pathologist well, but this time around Molly’s office was just down the hall from his and their positions were ones that worked together a little more often. Atlantis didn’t have a lot of crime on it’s own, but between the COS and the weirdness that happened here, the science division hardly lacked for things to do. It didn’t take very long to cross the distance between the meeting spot and Coffee Me Better. “Ladies first,” he said gallantly, holding the door open for her as they arrived. “Why thank you,” she said with a smile. The few interactions she’d had with Barry before she left had been pleasant but few and far between, so she was glad he had agreed. She already knew Dyson well enough from their time working together in Colorado, when she had helped with various forensic things there, but it would be nice to get to know a fellow forensic scientist she didn’t already know well. She placed her order and waited for Barry to place his, and then added a few of the delicious mini scones there for good measure. She was sure she remembered Barry had an enormous appetite so she ordered double the portions. If he ate more of them she supposed it would mean she’d fit into a wedding dress better, should she decide to wear one in the first place. Once everything was ready she carried her coffee and the scones to a padded booth and sat on one side. “By all means, feel free,” she said, indicating the scones, which were a mixture of various flavors. They had currant here and she’d made sure to get at least one for herself. Insisting on helping, Barry had grabbed some of the scones along with his own coffee. He couldn’t just let her do all the heavy lifting, even if none of it was heavy. “How are you finding it, being back?” he asked as he helped himself to one of the scones. “It’s good,” she said with a smile. “I’m mostly happy Leonard was still here when I got back, and we were still engaged. I don’t know if I’d have stayed again if he wasn’t here.” She took a sip of her coffee. “I’m also glad to get the opportunity to go back to my old profession. The last time home I got to learn some new techniques, which will be lovely to put into use. It’s one of the few good things coming from the yo-yo effect...there’s so little of me on the series that I got to live through a lot of good things I had no clue about.” Barry nodded. He could understand how that might have felt even if he didn’t have anyone like that here, really. He had friends, he had Caitlin and Cisco and he had missed Caroline during that brief time that she’d been gone, but after so many months - getting close to a year, in fact - in Atlantis without Iris, Barry kind of doubted her being here was ever going to be a thing. Still, he could understand how it would feel to come back and find someone you loved was gone. He was glad she hadn’t had to go through it. “Sometimes I wish I was a minor part of my series,” he admitted ruefully. “It was definitely an adjustment to come to a place where absolutely everyone knew I was The Flash after keeping the secret for so long.” “I can imagine that must be strange,” she said with a nod. She didn’t make it a point to watch anything anyone she was friendly with was in here in Atlantis, but she had caught a few episodes on the internet when she didn’t remember she knew Barry so she had some idea of how hard he had tried to keep people from finding out he was the Flash. “You know what I’ve realized? In a way, we’re both legacies,” she said as the thought struck her. “Well, you more than I, since I’m only in the BBC version. But there’s been a Flash in most universe since at least the 1940s or so, and Sherlock is the most portrayed fictional character in history in most universes, I believe, or at least where Sir Conan Doyle got pressured into bringing him back. It’s interesting, for me at least, to see so many different versions of my friends, and how some are very similar and some are vastly different.” She had a sip of her coffee. “Do you ever read the comics? Or did you see the Justice League film?” “Oh, no. No way.” Barry shook his head as he took a drink of his coffee. “Seeing a different version of myself? I mean, I know there are a ton of different Earths out there and there’s a Barry Allen on pretty much all of them, but I don’t want to know what all those different versions of me are like.” He hadn’t even been able to bring himself to watch his own show and see what was in store for his future. It just seemed like a bad idea. She nodded. “I think if there were other versions of me in existence, I’d be curious, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see what they’re like. Though it was rather interesting reading the books and watching the American show and seeing the differences between them. I mean, I certainly wouldn’t mind Joan Watson showing up. I like to think we’d get on well.” She had some more of her coffee. “But if there was another me? I’m not sure I could handle that. It might be a bit...too much.” Barry just nodded. He didn’t know a lot about the world Molly came from, specifically, but everyone knew about Sherlock Holmes and how many different versions there were out there. It didn’t feel the same as all the different earths in his own dimension, but maybe that was because he’d actually visited some of those. She had some of her coffee and then picked up a scone. “Is there anyone you’re hoping to have join you here?” she asked, hoping it wasn’t too insensitive a topic. She didn’t know much about Barry but she was aware from overhearing things that there was a woman he cared about greatly at home. If nothing else, if he wanted to talk about her, she’d be more than willing to listen. Barry thought briefly of Iris, but then he remembered how they’d left things and he just shook his head. “Cisco and Caitlin are here. Kara and Oliver, too. I’m really lucky to have all of them theme with me. They make being away from home a lot easier.” “Well, that’s good,” she said with a smile. “I think if my friends were here I’d be...happier, possibly. There have been some...miscommunications, I suppose, about feelings regarding each other.” She had some of her coffee. Perhaps everything that had gone on with Sherlock here as opposed to what had happened at home should have made her confused, but then again, she was engaged to a man from the future who had fought a villain in his own time who looked like her Sherlock so she supposed it was all relative. “I have to admit, I don’t know your friends well, but they all seem rather lovely. You’re lucky to have them.” “Yeah, I am lucky to have them,” Barry agreed. They all seemed to be from different times, but that didn’t matter. He was just really glad to have them all around. She smiled and had a little more of her coffee. Perhaps there would be more conversations at a later date between them, but for a first conversation, this was going rather well. Hopefully it would continue to do so... |
