The goal was to paintball with his team, but some things came up that made it a little impossible for the day, no big deal, they were going to reschedule, and maybe he could talk one of the other teams into a contest and a skills test for it, it’d be good training, but also fun training. Tommy was just leaving the base when he caught sight of one of the field commanders, he didn’t really know her well but on a whim waved his hand. “You up for a little paintball challenge?” He asked directly as they both paused by the elevator. Natasha loved paintball, and it had been a while since she’d done it so when Tommy mentioned it, she raised an eyebrow and looked at him. “You’re challenging me?” she asked. It was the perfect time. She’d finished early today and didn’t have anything planned for the rest of the day. “Sure, let’s do it. You’re McConnell, right?” Nat tried to remember everyone’s names, but with the way people came and went, it was hard to keep up. She was pretty sure she was correct about this guy though. Tilting his head slightly he shrugged indicating he might be or her might not be, and she could take it or leave all on her own. He considered saying just that but she agreed pretty quickly getting a rare real smile out of him. “It’s a plan,” he said as they rode the elevator up. “Tommy,” he corrected. “You’re Romanoff.” He stated. “Natasha,” she replied. “But yes, the other half is Romanoff.” She knew that most everyone knew her either by name or reputation, there was also the fact that her red hair set her apart from most everyone aside from Mara Jade. “so paintball? How good are you?” Tommy made a point of knowing the people who were potentially going to be in charge of a mission he might someday go on. Shrugging he wasn’t sure how to answer her question, how good was he? “Well, I was the tactical and weapons expert for a team based out of the Hague for a few years.” Was all he offered as they exited the elevator headed towards the doors to get to the paintball field. “That’s good to know, but I meant how good are you at paintball,” she gave him a smirk. “Besides I already knew that much about you.” Tommy wasn’t the only one who did his homework, and Natasha’s photographic memory came in handy more often than not. “Guess you’ll have to find out for yourself,” he answered. “Can’t give away too many secrets.” Tommy was pretending it was tactical, but in truth, he was just having fun with the idea of not telling her his paintball skills. It wasn’t a long walk to the course. When they got there, he held the door open for her before going in himself. “Well then, let’s get started,” she said. “How do you want to do this?” “Pick a color. I’ll take the other, you get one half the course, I get the other, first one to shoot the other 5 times wins.” Tommy said. The person working fitted them for their gear and handed them both their guns filled with their chosen colors. They were each taken to a door on different sides of the urban course. There was a countdown, and they both were allowed out on the course. Tommy set up a couple of trip wires around his side and stayed out of sight for a long time. They both got each other a few times pretty early on before both went for more tactical advantages. The score was 4 - 3 Tommy when Natasha managed to sneak up and get him again. The next two hours they kept missing each other until they came face to face with their weapons pointed at each other, without hesitating they shot at the same time, heating each other at the same time making it a draw. “Well I guess that’s it,” Natasha said. “Good game. I’d say a draw isn’t bad considering I haven’t done this in a long time.” It had been fun, and she was glad she’d run into him. She might not admit it, but Nat didn’t relax a lot. She was always halfway expecting something to happen and this kind of game was perfect for her. It required strategy, but it also took skill so she could play while still feeling like she wasn’t letting her training down. Tommy raised an eyebrow. “Rematch next week, and it’s time to head to the pub.” He didn’t wait for a reaction he just turned and headed out of the course. “You got it,” she said and followed him. This was going to be fun, she thought. |
