Early December
Katima Callahan ✦ Jackson McConnel
Talking a Walk PG ✦ Complete |
No matter what he said or how he said it, there was always going to be something about Kai Parker that made Jackson want to shoot things. Preferably the head off of the vampire’s body. He’d imagined target practice with various of his body parts so many times, and that was no different here even if the guy technically hadn’t done anything. Not to him or his friends anyway. He’d done plenty of other things in the past to other people he cared about and their families. The others were right, though. Joe and Katima were right, and it was better that he didn’t engage the guy at all anymore. Jack didn’t want to be any part of accidentally giving the secret away that he had kids here, two kids, in fact. He might have been without his magic, but he also didn’t trust Atlantis not to play some sort of trick. Meeting down in the lobby of where they were staying, Jackson smiled at Katima when she appeared, and they headed outside. Being December, it was a little chilly, so he stuffed his hands in his pockets and tightened his jacket around himself. After they’d fallen into step together, Jack glanced over at her. “So, how did the talk with your mom go?” “Good,” Katima said, looking over at Jackson as they walked. “A little awkward, I guess. It’s hard to know what to tell them, about the future,” she admitted after a brief pause.Seeing her mom was amazing. Being able to just do normal things like go to a brownie making class with her was beyond anything she’d ever dared to dream about. “It’s so great just to be able to spend time with her, you know?” “Yeah, I know. I think they’ve figured out some of the basics, but it’s best not to tell them everything.” Jack wondered how she could keep from telling her mother about her own future though considering what happened. “It’s cool seeing my parents like this and freaking out my dad, but I know it’s a lot more than that for you.” Eventually they’d find a way to send them all back to their own times, but it was going to be even harder for her to go back after being here. “The longer we’re here, the more likely he’s going to find out.” He paused for a moment. “Do you think she’ll end up telling him?” Katima shook her head. “I don’t think she will. I told her.. A lot of it or enough that she could pretty much guess the rest. She gets why I don’t want him to know about us.” That hadn’t been an easy conversation or anything she had wanted to dwell on when she could be getting to know her mother, but she trusted her. She knew Jack was right, that the longer they stayed, the more likely her father would find out who she was. She didn’t want that, but she knew she also couldn’t pass up this chance to spend time with her mom. Jackson nodded. He figured that she’d tell her especially if she needed to make it clear that Kai couldn’t find out who she was. He didn’t know Claire, but he knew she was a smart woman. Considering the type of work that she did, it wouldn’t have been hard to figure out why Katima wouldn’t want to see him even if she hadn’t told her details. The problem, though, was even if Claire had every intention to keep it from him, there was still something there. Something that had led Katima and Kader to be born in the first place. She still lived with the guy, and he still had some kind of pull over her that made Jack uncomfortable. “That’s good.” He paused for a moment but then eventually turned to look at her seriously. “If he ever does find out, he won’t get near you, alright? Even if he doesn’t have his magic here, he’s still a vampire. But you’re safe. We’ll all find a way to keep him from getting to you, and you know that Liv and Bonnie and some of the others would help too.” “I know.” Katima couldn’t help but smile at the protectiveness in his voice. “I’m not completely helpless myself, you know,” she teased him. “Full power Kai Parker was pretty unstoppable, but without his magic, I can take him if I have to.” Katima was a lot stronger than she sometimes seemed. She had a lot of power, herself. She wasn’t afraid of her father, not here where he was neutered, but that didn’t mean she wanted to see him or for him to even know who she was. “Yeah, yeah I know. Still, though. He’s your father. It’s got to be weird no matter what it was like back home.” She just hoped that he didn’t suck her in and then turn on her later. The guy didn’t exactly have the best history for keeping his word or being trustworthy in the past, present, or future. It was better to just stay away completely. “But, anyway. I’m glad you’ve been able to get to know your mom. And, hey, we get to see Atlantis in all its glory. That’s pretty awesome, yeah?” Katima grinned, happy for the subject change. “It’s really awesome,” she agreed. It was hard to get over how different everything looked in color. It was beautiful. Getting the chance to see it like this, that was a gift all on it’s down. She might have other priorities, but she understood exactly why he’d been spending so much time at the beach since their arrival here. You just couldn’t help wanting to soak it all in. “No picture could ever do this justice,” she added as she took in their surroundings a little more. “It’s nice to actually see everything we’ve been fighting for, for real, rather than just reading and hearing about the good old days.” “Yeah, it’s better than the small pieces I remember from home or what they told us about. We need to go ride some flying horses too. Because that looks badass.” He’d heard stories about the Pegasi from his parents and their friends. Sometimes they were used on missions and sometimes just were there for the fun of riding them. “It just gives us a better reason to remember what we’re fighting for back home,” He said, knowing that Katima was thinking about staying if she could but knew that, for him, he was needed there instead of here. That still wouldn’t keep him from missing this place or the people here from his timeline and from all the others. “Yeah.” Katima was thinking about trying to stay, if she could, but she didn’t want to think about that now and she especially didn’t want to think about her friends going back without her. Knowing Jack, he’d want to. He was too dedicated to the resistance to stay behind when there was still something to fight, and Joe was the same way. Dwelling on that seemed ridiculous when she didn’t even know if they’d let her stay here, though. “Let’s go find the pegasi right now,” she suggested with a grin. She took another step in the direction of the stables, but then when she tried to take another, she couldn’t. Trying to lift her feet from the ground, she realized she was actually stuck. “What the hell?” Jackson was all about going to ride some flying horses, but all of a sudden they both realized that neither could really move. Katima tried stepping forward and then so did Jackson. He looked at her with a frown. “I can’t move either.” No one seemed to care that they were stuck in place as people passed them by, and as Jackson was looking around, he looked up and saw what he assumed to be the culprit. He’d heard tales of this around the holidays. “I think I know.” He couldn’t help but laugh as he pointed up to the mistletoe above them. Katima laughed with him as she looked up in the direction he was pointing to spot the mistletoe floating above their heads. “You know, I always thought those stories had to be myths or exaggerations,” she admitted. The idea of a type of mistletoe that literally trapped you in place until you kissed someone was pretty ridiculous. Apparently it was an actual thing, though. “I guess there’s only one way out of this,” she added a little awkwardly, biting her lower lip as she looked up at him. “Who are we to go against the will of Atlantis?” he said but was teasing a little. It wasn't like he'd ever be turned off by kissing Katima. Not at all, and it was kind of the opposite. If there was anyone he'd thought about in that way, it would have been her. Smiling, he leaned in to kiss her and even though the mighty mistletoe wasn't asking for more than a simple kissed, he probably lingered a little longer than necessary. Thankfully, though, she didn't seem to mind. Pulling back, he paused a moment before stepping back. When it was clear they'd been set free, he shrugged. “I guess that did the trick, huh?” Katima definitely didn’t mind it. Getting close to people had never been incredibly easy for her, but he was one of her best friends and if she was honest with herself, it was more than that. If she had to be stuck under the mistletoe with anyone, she was really glad it was him. She was smiling as she looked up at him after they pulled away again and she nodded her head. “I guess we must have satisfied the will of Atlantis,” she agreed. “Ready to go ride some flying horses?” Grinning, Jackson nodded and they started forward. “You bet I am. Let's go flying.” He took her hand and pulled her forward so that they were on the way. Jackson wasn't sure what was going to happen or if they'd end up staying, but he'd enjoy being here while it lasted. |
