Becker ✦ octavia
talking or not Low complete |
The whole having kids thing? Was crazy. Having kids that were already older than her? Really crazy. Having adult kids with Becker? Really fucking crazy. It wasn’t that she couldn’t see it; the fact that Octavia could see it was part of the problem. When she’d first started working with him, there had been a brief attraction there on her part, but she’d moved past it. If the memory upgrade she’d gotten had taught her anything, it was that she was better off staying focused on her work. Plus, now she and Becker were roommates. It made things even more complicated with the kid showing up. In the few times she’d had the chance to spend with her, Octavia could see both herself and her father in Indra. Indra. Just the name of her old mentor made her miss home more than she had in a long while. Since it had been a long day, she cut out a few minutes early and decided to go through a quick workout before taking a run back to her apartment. The run felt good, and by the time she took the stairs to her floor inside Tower One, she felt like she could probably go another mile or two. Once back in the apartment, she was shaking out her ponytail when she saw Becker coming out of the kitchen. They’d met with Indra together, but they hadn’t really talked one on one about the new arrival. Everything at work had been all business, or they’d just avoided talking about it. “Hey,” she said and went for a cold bottle of water from the fridge. “Everything with the telescope going alright?” Working was key, that was the only way that Becker could handle any of this. Kids? With Octavia? Kids? The kids part was the weirdest part of it. He didn't think about the with who or what all that meant, instead he kept his thoughts to himself and focused on work. Yeah, right. It was so hard to pay attention when he'd gotten back to the building he ended up in the kitchen needing to reheat the water for his tea over and over again as he stood there blankly. Eventually snapping out of it, Becker made his cup of tea and was startled by a familiar voice. "It's going, Simmons and Uhura have it under control." Normally he'd give more detail to her, but that involved more talking, hell, he couldn't even figure out what else to say. “That’s good.” It was good, and she probably would have asked more about it if he’d given her more to go off of. Octavia knew that Becker wasn’t the most talkative, which she usually appreciated, but he could be mum about things if he didn’t want to make conversation. Usually, she was the same way, but between the two of them she was the bigger talker and that was definitely saying something. She waited there just drinking the water a second while trying to figure out what the hell to say. Even if it was bullshit for making conversation that would have been better than the awkward silence. Normally the silences between them were comfortable ones. Once she’d busied herself and had already finished off over half of the water bottle, she turned to one of the cabinets and looked for a box of something to heat up on the stove. “Soo…,” she said with her back still turned to him. “There’s this whole big ass elephant in the room that we should probably talk about. I guess.” Course she wanted to talk about it, not that Becker could blame her. They had a kid together in the future, and he knew that was something that people typically had to talk about, but it was also a conversation that he wasn't exactly excited to have. It was confusing enough for him, talking about it was probably just going to make him more confused. Nodding his agreement that they should talk about it he almost opened his mouth to say something but what came to mind was a sarcastic joke, and somehow that didn't seem like the right thing to say in this situation, so instead, he nodded again indicating that she could start. Coward, he thought to himself as he took another sip of his tea waiting to see what she had to say. It wasn’t that Octavia wanted to talk about this, but it seemed like the thing to do to keep shit from being awkward. Or more awkward. She really fucking hoped that this wouldn’t make things worse. Instead of saying something at first, she chugged about half of her bottle of water to keep from having to say anything and in an attempt to figure out what to say. The time it took to drink half the bottle wasn’t enough apparently. “Okay, so I know this is probably freaking you out. It did me too. I just, I don’t want it to make things weird. We’ve always gotten along well, and clearly we get along even better in some version of the future, but I don’t want to make this weird because we have this kid show up from the future who might not even be from our future. God knows they’re all coming from all kinds of different timelines.” "Far as we can tell there are three futures," he said looking away from her before looking towards her. Becker had a feeling if he kept things professional it would be easier, he liked Octavia, but he also liked things he could control and a future where kids show up, and they are his and Octavia's sort of threw him for a loop. "I don't think it'll make things weird unless we let it make things weird." Right, because he was acting so normal, he told himself he was with his lack of words and his nodding. Yeah, that was exactly how he normally acted right? “Um, yeah. I guess.” Octavia stared at him for a minute. This whole professional thing was throwing her off and making things feel even more weird because while she normally had no problem taking a job or a task seriously, this was hardly the same thing. Besides, the fact that they had a kid meant that they’d at some point gone way beyond professional. “And things aren’t weird because we haven’t let them get weird. That’s… good.” It was phrased like a statement but felt more like a question because she really wasn’t sure how to read him right now. Usually, she could figure him out pretty easy, but right now she wasn’t sure if he was being weird because of the fact he had a kid or the fact that the kid was with her specifically. "Nothing weird," he agreed draining the last of his tea. Heading towards the sink, he started to clean his dishes methodically almost not saying anything for a couple of moments. Part of him was surprised to see Octavia still standing there. "Well, I'm off to the shops," he informed her as if it were a normal bit of conversation. "Dark chocolate, yeah?" He asked although he didn't look at her as he headed towards the exit. Octavia was a little surprised she was standing there herself. All of this was just so fucking weird that she wasn’t sure what to do. Saying that things wouldn’t be weird almost made things feel more weird. She usually considered herself to be a fairly straightforward kind of girl who could roll with most things as they came and didn’t need a lot of coddling, but the kid thing was really throwing her for a loop. Kids with Becker was just weird no matter how much they said neither of them would make it weird. “Um, yeah. Dark chocolate. Thanks.” She wasn’t sure if he was going about his normal business or if he just wanted to get out of the apartment. Either way, she wanted to go find Cappie again and see if they could get back going on round two of their binge. Or she could rejoin him if he was still going strong. Grabbing a box of crackers along with her water, Octavia ended up in her room and plopped down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. If he wasn’t going to feel weird about this then she was determined to act the same way. |
