NOVEMBER SOMETIME
Katie Bell & Hikaru Sulu
Making Plans PG - No warnings Complete |
Katie listened attentively to the story Hikaru was telling her or at least she put on a good show of listening, but truthfully her mind was in the thoughts she’d read from him during the Care Bear party. Temporary telepathy was hardly the weirdest thing she’d experienced in Atlantis, but she hadn’t expected to learn the full scope of just how well they’d known each other in his world, One she couldn’t even remember ever visiting. It felt strange, even knowing it was a thing plenty of others here had experienced. She’d been sitting on her newfound knowledge for about a week now, wondering if she should tell him she knew or if she should wait for him to bring it up. She thought the latter seemed like the better idea, but the problem was that Katie had never had a lot of patience and Hikaru didn’t seem to be in a rush to tell her about their history in his world or even make a move in this one. “Are you ever going to ask me out?” she blurted finally, rudely interrupting what he’d been saying. Probably not the best lead in to this conversation, but subtlety had never been one of her strengths, either. He’d been enjoying the time he was spending with Katie even though she had no memories of their relationship from before. In a way it was good to know that she still liked spending time with him and wasn’t just doing it because she knew that they’d been close before. He was also glad that Demora liked her and she seemed to like Demora. As for actually asking her on an official date, he was still a little nervous but he wanted to. The time just never felt right. It seemed that this was going to be the time. “What?” he said in surprise and then quickly gathered himself. “Do you want me to ask you out? I mean you’d go out with me if I asked?” Sulu was stumbling over his words but he finally managed to get out something that resembled a coherent thought. “I’ve been wanting to ask you out, I just wasn’t sure you’d go.” “I know you have, you muppet,” Katie retorted, reaching over to lightly smack his arm. “I’ve known since the bloody Care Bear party, but I’ve been trying to be patient and wait for you to actually DO it.” It was mad to think he hadn’t been sure if she would say yes. She thought it was rather obvious that she liked spending her time with him. She laughed at his jokes, she flirted, she even played with his daughter on occasion, although that might have been more to do with that fact that she was bloody adorable. “You’re kind of an idiot, you know,” she added, half teasing. “Were you ever even going to tell me the truth about how well we knew each other where you’re from?” “I was but I didn’t know how to go about it,” he said with a shrug. “I know we’re all kind of used to this dimension hopping thing but you never know how things are going to be. When I first got here and saw that you were here, I didn’t know if you were involved with someone and I sort of asked around.” He gave her a sheepish grin. “I didn’t want to tell you everything if you did even though I was hoping you didn’t for my sake. As it turns out you didn’t so I wanted to let you get to know me and then make up your mind. Then I kind of got scared and didn’t know how to tell you.” He reached out and took her hand. “But yeah, we had just started to really work on having a relationship when I got zapped here. I guess I’m still back there and so are you in some form but yes, I would very much like to go out with you here.” “Well, alright, that sort of makes sense.” She supposed she might have acted the same way if their roles were reversed, so maybe she couldn’t really blame him. He’d been here just under two months, which wasn’t that long at all, really. She couldn’t help grinning at him when he admitted to what she already knew. “Then let’s go out,” she agreed easily. She was still getting to know him, but it wasn’t a hard choice to be ready for a little more than simply friendship here. “Okay, where do you want to go? There is plenty to choose from here, that’s for sure.” Sulu had been amazed at the things that Atlantis had to offer. To say that there was something for everyone was an understatement. “We can out to dinner or go dancing if you want, I’m up for pretty much anything. I’ll just need to find a sitter because as much as I love Demora, I don’t think she’d be a lot of fun on a date.” he laughed. “Dinner and dancing sounds brilliant,” Katie admitted, laughing as he mentioned the sitter. “You know, I love Demora, but going out alone sounds like a lot more fun,” she agreed. “Have you been to a tango night yet? They do them every Sunday.” “I have not been to a tango night although I’ve heard a lot of people talk about them. I can’t say that I’ve ever done the tango. It’s never too late to learn.” Sulu loved learning how to do new things, in fact he had quite a vast range of interests which surprised most people when they got to know him. “Tango night sounds like fun, if you’ll forgive me for my two left feet until I get used to it.” “Guess I better wear some good shoes,” Katie teased. It would be fun no matter what, but she did kind of hope her toes didn’t get too trampled. “So, Sunday night? Dinner and Tango? It’s a date?” “Yes, it is definitely a date. I’m looking forward to it.” Sulu smiled at her, relieved that things had worked out the way they had. He hadn’t realized how much he’d been hoping that things would mirror what had happened on the ship until he started spending time with Katie. Now it looked like everything was going to be just fine. |
