Jyn Erso ✦ Bodhi Rook
Researching Halloween Entirely too cute Complete |
Jyn had no idea what this whole Halloween thing that everyone was talking about was and she couldn’t decide if she wanted to know or not. The sin balls had freaked her out, she had never in her life been so lazy, but compared to what some of the others had had or some of the other things that had happened in Atlantis in general, it seemed that she got off easily. She had looked back at the network for that day and had been shocked that she had practically invited Bodhi over to hang out in bed with her but he hadn’t taken it that way and she was glad. Jyn would be the first to admit that her people skills needed work but they were much better than they had been in the past. She finally came to the conclusion that it was better to be informed so she’d gone to the library and checked out some books about Halloween and invited Bodhi over. She had picked up some food and after dinner, they had settled on the couch to look through the books. At the moment Jyn was without a roommate so they didn’t have to worry about disturbing anyone. “This is strange. It sounds like no one really knows how it started and it’s turned into different things over the years. Um.” While Bodhi had known it was somewhat out of character for Jyn to laze around he hadn’t thought it was such a bad thing. Taking time for herself was something she should probably do more of so it hadn’t worried him and hearing things from others who had been affected it sounded like it was one of the easier things to have experienced. He enjoyed hanging out with her and hadn’t read anything more into her offer to doing so while she’d been affected by the laziness. Bodhi’s people skills probably needed more work than anybody but he was slowly getting there. He felt more and more like himself each day. “I’ve noticed that scaring each other as well as yourself is the overall theme” he replied with a frown, “I don’t really know why you’d want to do that” Bodhi had experienced true fear often enough to know it wasn’t something he particularly enjoyed feeling. Why on earth would people purposefully scare themselves? Or their so called friends? “Some of the pranks described in these are awful” “They really are,” Jyn agreed. “I don’t understand why anyone would want to do these things to someone on purpose. There are enough things in the universe to frighten someone without frightening one another.” She shook her head and turned another page, raising an eyebrow at what she saw. “In some cultures they celebrate it as ‘The Day of the Dead’ and try to bring their loved ones back from beyond the grave. Or that’s what it seems like. I understand wanting to see them again but who knows what they come back as?” it was getting weirder and weirder the more she read. “At least the part where they pass out candy doesn’t seem so bad,” she laughed. “Although you don’t need a holiday to do that. You could do that anytime. It seems like a lot of things are celebrated by handing out food. There were plenty of times back home when I would have been happy to run across something like that.” Bodhi definitely agreed with that, there was no need to inflict such frights on each other, all you had to do was look at the galaxy, there were enough things out there to last a lifetime of nightmares. “Bringing people back from the dead? That sounds the worst of all so far” he said, shifting closer to read the book Jyn was reading, playing with life and death wasn’t something anybody should do. Bodhi remembered his mother saying that while he was growing up on Jedha. “Food seems to be a big thing in a lot of these celebrations” he nodded in agreement, “I think they must not have a lack of it” Bodhi said, he’d been to many different planets and seen the starvation across their galaxy to know lack of food was something many people knew well. “But I prefer the food part more than the scaring part, I can handle that bit” he grinned at her. “So do I,” she said, returning his grin. “I can’t get used to that, the fact that there is always more than enough to eat. There were a lot of times after I went on the run when we didn’t have anything or it might be days in between…” her voice trailed off. “I feel so lucky to be here sometimes, to have a second chance, it’s more than I deserve.” Jyn shook her head and looked over at him. “I’m also very happy that you’re here now. Not that I wasn’t happy when Cassian showed up but I never got to really talk to you that much. It was all so crazy, it’s nice to have a chance now.” Bodhi reached out and laid a gentle hand on hers, he didn’t know a lot about her story but he could guess how hard it had been for her. The galaxy wasn’t a warm and welcoming place for those not following orders. Even those who were didn’t always have an easy time of it. “I am grateful for the second chance too” he said softly, he’d gone on the mission accepting he would most likely die and he was happy it had been a worthy death but being here was something he was going to enjoy and make the most of. He smiled, ducking his head a little, “It didn’t help that I was still a little crazy too” he said wryly, having his head scrambled hadn’t been great but he was glad it didn’t seem to be permanent. The need for his piloting skills had broken through something which had enabled him to be useful, and he was continuing his recovery here. “It’ll be good to get to know you better too Jyn” Jyn knew about Bor Gullett and what it did to people although she tried not to think about during her time with Saw. “I’m glad that you were able to get through it and still be okay,” she said, giving his hand a squeeze. “I’ve seen what that thing can do, it’s awful, but you managed to beat it and I’m glad you did. We needed you and honestly I bet a lot of people would say we were all a little bit crazy for doing what we did,” she smiled at him. Bodhi smiled, flushing a little under her regard but maintaining eye contact, “You showed a lot of faith in me, even after everything, I didn’t want to let you down” Not many people would have trusted him with piloting anything after seeing the state he was in but they had, even more Jyn had trusted him with their call sign and the confidence he felt after that was something he’d always remember. “We didn’t have a choice, we all had to take a leap of faith and trust each other,” she said. “My father trusted you so I knew that I could trust you. It might have been years since I’d seen him but I knew he wouldn’t pick someone that he couldn’t trust to deliver such an important message.” Even though Jyn hadn’t understood why her father had gone willingly with the Empire when she’d learned about it, she understood his reasons now and at least she’d gotten to see him one last time. She was about to say something else and then realized that she was still holding Bodhi’s hand. Her face turned red and she moved to pick up the book she’d been looking at, even though she would have been happy to keep her hand where it was. That was something she would need to think about so for now, it was back to the books. Bodhi smiled and nodded, they’d all been forced to trust each other really. Trust but not really know and he was glad that here they would get that chance. “He was a good man, he helped me find a different path and it led me to you” he looked down when she moved her hand and moved to pick up a book of his own. His hand seemed cooler without hers enclosed in it but he focused on the books once again and pushed that thought to one side. It was far too complicated to think about now. She couldn’t help but give him a sideways glance, wondering if he’d felt what she had felt. Jyn had felt a connection to him from the moment they’d met, she’d been curious about him and about why her father had trusted him. After spending time with him, she understood and she knew she could trust him too. “Well let’s see,” she said, returning to the book in her hand. “Apparently cats are a thing too.” she turned the book so he could see the black cat. “I’ve seen some cats around here. At least those are animals that I recognize. I don’t know half the animals they have here. Have you seen the flying horses?” Bodhi definitely felt a connection to Jyn, one that went beyond what her father had told him about her. She was a strong leader and he respected her a lot. Bodhi shook his head, “No, I should make sure I do that. There are a lot of creatures here that are interesting, though it is a shame they don’t seem to be able to communicate” Bodhi had noticed how most people in this time were human or human looking, it was definitely not as diverse as their own galaxy. Or it didn’t seem to be. “No, they can’t. I think that Reyna, she oversees the lessons, might be able to communicate telepathically with them but I’m not certain. They come from her world I believe so that would make sense. Nearly everyone here is human or humanoid at least,” she went on. “There are witches and wizards here but they’re good ones, not bad. Believe it or not there are some Jedi here although I haven’t met them in person. Well except for Mara but I don’t believe she’s a Jedi although she does have a light saber. Cassian would know the answer to that question better than I.” Bodhi nodded, communicating with them would be good but it was true. Most people here were humanoid and that seemed to be normalcy for them all. “Jedi?” Now that was interesting, there were no more jedi in their version of the galaxy, so hearing about some here was fascinating. “Cassian? He has got to know them better?” he asked, that was even more interesting since he had assumed Jyn and Cassian were...closer. “He’s been on some missions with them, he’s a field commander so he’s been on more than I have,”’ she explained. “He hasn’t said a lot but i know there are a few. Mara is Cassian’s girlfriend I guess you would say. He doesn’t talk about his personal life a lot but I’ve met her and it’s not hard to tell that he’s happy with her.” Jyn grinned. “He even cracks a smile now and then, believe it or not. If it had been up to me, I probably wouldn’t have tried to get to know anyone but he encouraged me so I’ve gotten to know a few people and everyone’s been very nice.” As she spoke Bodhi was glad to see that Jyn didn’t appear to be upset by Cassian having a girlfriend. And he was happy to know that his friends had found happiness here, it wasn’t like they didn’t deserve it after all. “People seem nice” he agreed, “I’m still glad you are here, it’s good to already have a friend around” It was reassuring while he got his confidence back, he didn’t have to worry about forming new friendships as a matter of urgency. “They are nice. Nearly everyone is in the same boat here,, we’ve all been brought here from somewhere else so I think that’s part of it. There are a few who are kind of stand offish but I think that might be how they are regardless,” she shrugged. “I’m glad you’re here too. I think you’ll like it here. Takes a little getting used to but at least you have Cassian and me. I was the first one here from our world, like I said the others are from farther in the future, and that was strange but I got used to it.” Bodhi nodded, “I am sure I will get used to it too and settle in as well as you and Cassian have” He wasn’t alone and that was the main thing for him. He was recovering from his experiences well and would continue to do so. |
