Gene had barely paid any attention to the hologram as it started blathering away at him. The main things that had registered were that he was in Atlantis and that Alex wasn't in the same room as him. The moment the message ended, he quickly yanked his mobile out of his pocket. Of course there was no service, so he reached for the new device. After scanning the network and failing to find a message from Alex, Gene stuffed it into the pocket of his crombie coat and rushed out the main door of the assigned flat.
She had to be here someplace. They wouldn't have brought just him, would they? After all, he and Alex had been together when they'd found that coin. "C'mon Bolly... please be here," he muttered to himself. In truth, Alex was getting really tired of this. She'd been standing next to Gene an hour earlier and had grabbed a coin only to be swept up in what she thought was a wind or a light or something, she couldn't quite place it, and landed here. First it had been Daytona and now this: Atlantis. Pulled from another place to be literally dropped in the middle of a place that was not supposed to be above ground if it existed at all! As with Daytona, Alex's first move was to leave the flat they'd put her in and take a look around. There were some familiar names on the network but that didn't take her interest at the moment. The number she had for Gene wasn't working... Stepping outside she let out a sigh. This looked completely different. Looking around she saw a familiar figure coming down the hall. She felt a relief pass through her. So she wasn't alone here. "Gene!" She started making her way to him. It took her little more than a moment. "That coin? Not a coin at all." She wrapped her arms around him, giving him a hug, the relief running through her. Gene crushed her to him as he hugged her, almost as if he was afraid that she'd vanish from in front of him. "Thought I'd lost you again, Bols," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Scared the 'ell out of me, woman. When I came to and saw I was by myself..." Alex felt herself relax, laying her head against his arm. Honestly, being moved once had been nerve wracking, twice without him? "I know I said you weren't going to lose me, but whatever that was has to be an exception." She frowned and pulled back, taking a look at him. She reached up and moved some stray hair out of his eyes. "This is crazy." "Why the bloody 'ell does this keep 'appenin' to us? At least this place said we can leave if we want. But where would we go back to? Daytona? London? You to the pub?" Gene gazed into her eyes for several long moments, then crashed his lips down on hers in a passionate kiss. "I don't care where we end up, Alex. If we leave, we don't know what's gonna 'appen. If we stay 'ere, at least we're together." "I should tell you right now, that if that pub shows up here? I'm not setting foot into it," she said firmly. But there was a teasing glint in her eyes and she smiled up at her boyfriend. Gene rolled his eyes, but smiled despite himself. She'd told him nearly the same thing when she had arrived in Daytona, but somehow it still fit the situation. "Another trip down the bloody rabbit hole. Right... let's get you back to our flat and start figurin' out this place. Didn't pay much attention to the hologram when it was explainin' because I was too busy wonderin' where the 'ell you were." He took hold of her hand and began leading Alex back towards the lift to the third floor, only to feel her tug and stop dead in her tracks. "What?" "Gene, that is my flat," she explained, pointing back towards the room she'd just come out of. "Is not. We're up on third in room 310," he countered. "Is too," Alex immediately answered in response. "We're not in the same flat this time." The moment the words left her lips, she braced herself for what she knew would be following. And as usual, Gene didn't disappoint. "WHAT?!? Who the 'ell made that decision? No... absolutely not. Someone's gonna get get my boot up their arse for this! They're not splittin' us up, Bolly. Not after everythin' we've been though!" Alex sighed and led Gene back into her room. "We'll sort it out, Gene. Just... I don't know. Sit down and we'll listen to the hologram again properly and see what we can find out. Alright? It's going to be fine... everything will be fine," she said, although Alex wasn't certain who she was trying to reassure, whether it was Gene or herself. "Either way, we're here together. We'll do what we always do, Gene. Take things as they come and face it together. It's going to be fine." It was clear by the expression on his face that Gene wasn't happy, but he gave as nod as he sat on the edge of her bed. "I 'ope you're right, Bols." While she was distracted and fiddling with the device, Gene reached a hand into the inner pocket of his coat and mentally sighed in relief as his hand closed around the small velvet box. It might be another new place, but he wasn't changing his mind. Come Christmas, he'd ask her. The only question now was when was Christmas in this new place? |
