"I think Lt. Uhura and I would be best suited for a game of Scrabble," Hoshi said as the teams figured out that was exactly what needed to happen to get any useful information out of the inhabitants. Glancing over at Uhura she gave a mildly worried smile and sat down nodding at the spot that was open for her. The table was set, and they were two-thirds of the way through the game when Hoshi pulled her arms back and arched her back for a stretch after a challenging play. "I-T I-S Y-O-U-R T-U-R-N," she said sitting normally once again. Nodding confidently, Uhura studied the board for a moment and her lips curved into a small smile as she came up with a high scoring word of her own. She had agreed easily that the pair of them were the best suited to this challenge, never doubt the Ensign or herself for a moment. In between turns, they’d both worked at getting what information they could out of this planet’s natives and she thought it was going well. She gave Hoshi a quick, approving nod when the others weren’t looking, letting her know she thought they were really getting somewhere. Hoshi’s only response was a long blink, so not to draw any unwanted attention to them. As the two inhabitants took a while on their next board, Hoshi took that moment to focus on exactly what words they had been using. She took a mental picture of it and had to stop herself from grinning when she put together the puzzle pieces of their words. She knew her next word would be a low scoring one, but it would communicate something more important. When it became her turn again, she knew it was a risk but the right one. She glanced at Uhura as if telling her this might seem weird, but she had a plan. As she put down the word GRASS in their language. The response was as desired as their two companions looked up and silently clapped their hands before nodding to Uhura for her turn. Nyota studied the board, herself, trying to put together the patterns and figure out where Hoshi was going with this. The planet’s natives were obviously pleased by what she had done, although it was hard to say if that was due to her word choice. Gambling that maybe it was the latter or both, her next word was in their language, too. It hadn’t been hard to pick up some key words and she knew they needed to show these people they could communicate with them before they would gain their trust. With a particularly loud clap of their hands, their opponents smiled before one of them reached down and flipped over the table sending the letters flying. Hoshi jumped as a P hit her cheek but before she could even say or do anything others were rushing around picking up the letters and setting them back down. As far as she could tell it looked like they were going for another round. Nyota looked over at Hoshi curiously, wondering if they had done something wrong when the table flipped over. She glanced at Hoshi’s cheek where the letter hit her after ducking her own flying letters. It looks like they wanted to play again. Maybe this was a part of their culture? The next round started a lot like the first one, they took their turn, each time it came around to her turn she tried to use their language more than her own. Hoshi could tell some of the people watching were starting to get bored, but the two they were playing looked anything but bored. After one of the two made a final mood, he stood up with a loud announcement. “T-H-E-Y W-I-N!” How exactly they won, Hoshi wasn’t sure, but she did want to get ice on her cheek and was starting to wonder if it was ever going to end. The locals were shocked, but surprisingly not unhappy. Congratulations were thrown at both Hoshi and Nyota. After being told they were going to fest an elder came up and handed them both a piece of paper. Before either of them had a chance to look at it they were pulled away to join the party. Not long after that, Uhura had been handed a drink that she pretended to drink a lot faster than she was while she chatted up one of the ones she’d been playing against. She and Hoshi had silently agreed to see if they could get anything out of them, now that they’d won the game and this guy seemed like he was actually going to be useful. At least that meant the bizarre game of scrabble had been worth it. |
