Atlantis Mall
Shopping Fun
Low - Complete |
Being in the factions felt so weird now looking back, but at the time had been the most normal thing in the world. Somehow this place had managed to screw with all of their minds, and that was even more scary to Emily than some of the other things that had happened here. From the weird party drinks, the COS agents, and even the whole fictional thing. Brainwashing was something completely new. Mostly, anyway. She'd been the victim of emotional and psychological torture, but she'd never been fully and completely brainwashed. Emily had thought that Mona was dead when they'd been in the factions. She remembered parts of what happened from home, but the timelines were screwy. Mona and Spencer had been killed in the car accident years ago right around the time they found out she was the first A and right before she'd been put into Radley. Instead, Mona had been stuck underground. Emily almost preferred the brainwashing over that. The shopping distraction was supposed to be for Mona, but the truth was, Emily could use the distraction too. She had the day off from work, so why not make the most of it by picking out a couple new outfits? She hadn't been shopping in a while, so she was looking forward to it. Emily was sipping on a frozen chocolatey coffee drink as they browsed some summer dresses in a store. A teal sundress caught her eye, and she held it up to herself with her free hand. “What about this?” She wasn't so sure about the color, but it looked light and comfortable. Mona was still a little hurt they’d thought she was dead. She admittedly had faked her own death, which...had ended, not well, but it had led them to a point where, maybe, just maybe they’d started to trust her. She didn’t know what else she could do to prove she wasn’t who she had been when she’d been unwell. But this place, it seemed to help in a weird way. Like Emily Fields being willing to go shopping with her, like she’d done so often with Hanna only she was actually paying for stuff. God, she’d been messed up even then. Needing Hanna to be hers, her friend and no one else's. She’d maybe hurt Emily most of all when she’d been A. But Emily had also shown unexpected strength. And she’d always respected that. Emily had understood immediately why being underground had bothered Mona so much. But maybe it was better than being someone else too. She’d had to be A for so long she’d come close to losing herself on occasion, when Charlotte had stopped her meds sometimes. But here, it was nice. Things were back to normal for the time being. “Teal? Really Em? And the cut doesn’t suit you. You’re looking at bolder colors, you don’t go teal you go blue, or...oh…” Mona immediately picked two dresses off the rail, one the blue she’d mentioned, a slightly darker shade and a red dress that would suit her very well. “Trust me. I know fashion almost as well as Hanna,” she said with a satisfied nod. “Try them on and we’ll think about shoes.” Emily made a face when she looked at the color again and put the dress back on the rack. Sometimes she liked to dress up and go the more fancy route, but generally she was the jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. She’d go casual when she could get away with it most of the time. Hanna was the fashion expert, Aria the more funky one, and Spencer the one who tended to go a little more business than the rest of them. Mona could be a mix of some of those depending on the occasion. She smiled, though, and took the two dresses over to the dressing room. Shorts and shirt off, she first tried on the blue. It looked nice, and Mona had definitely been right about the change of color. She wasn’t completely convinced yet, so she went ahead and slipped on the red. It was light and airy but it fit in all the right places. The shade of red blended wonderfully with her skin tone. She stepped out of the dressing room and over to the mirrors for Mona to give a thumbs up or down. “I think the red, yeah?” She did a half turn in the three-way mirror to get a better look of the back. It did look pretty good if she did say so herself. “Did you have anything you wanted to try?” Mona waited browsing some things for herself as Emily tried on the dresses. They both would suit her pretty well but she hoped she’d go with the red. Mona had found a dress in a dark purple she wanted to try so hung it on a rack behind her as she waited on Emily. When the woman finally exited the changing room Mona nodded decidedly impressed. “Told you” she said “It’s amazing on you.” This reminded her so much of home. Of something normal. She’d found a life here, weird as it was. Confusing as it was. Complicated sometimes but good too. She liked her team, she liked the people she’d talked to and sometimes it was pretty okay that not everyone knew the things that she had done back home. Emily and Aria had been pretty good about that and it meant a lot. “I have this...what do you think, will I suit the purple?” Emily smiled. “You were definitely right,” she said. Even the fabric was soft and comfortable, so she counted this shopping trip as a win already. When Mona held up the purple dress, she studied it for a moment then gave a nod of approval. “Yeah, I think it’ll look great on you. That shade of purple in particular.” The two girls had a somewhat similar skin tones, so that probably helped when judging clothes for each other. When Mona went into her own dressing room, Emily disappeared back into hers to change back into her regular clothes. It didn’t take her long, so she waited for Mona while she tried on the dress. “This was a good idea,” she said outside her door. “Shopping, I mean. I can’t remember the last time I went shopping just for the sake of a fun afternoon.” “I have the best ideas” she called through the door as she slipped the dress on. “But you should totally know that by now, and whatever, you deserved a day out. And you don’t suck as a shopping partner, can you imagine doing this with Spencer?” She took a moment, slipping her shoes back on, she wanted the full effect and that included the little extra height her shoes gave her. “Are you gonna be in my show BT dubs. Whatever I wind up doing? I want both you guys helping” she asked, zipping up the dress and admiring herself in the mirror before opening the door and doing a little twirl. “So? Approved?” “We went shopping sometimes. Not as much for just the fun of it, but more like… shopping with a purpose.” It was rare that Spencer ever did anything that wasn’t with some kind of purpose. It was actually something she admired about the other girl. “And we both deserved a day out.” Emily’s eyes scanned a few of the items left on the rack inside the dressing room as she waited to see if anything caught her eye. So far everything was pretty obvious why they were passed over. “Yeah, I mean, I can help out. I’m not really the musically inclined type, but I can help out in some other way.” When Mona stepped out of the dressing room, Emily got a good look at her in the dress, twirl and all. She smiled. “Definitely approved. Onto shoes next?” Mona smiled, pleased. Of course she knew she looked good but it was nice to have the confirmation. And they really did both deserve the day out. Things back home were...messy as ever. So being here was actually better. And it was possible that they’d finally let her in. Aria and Emily had always been the most interesting to her. Of course they weren’t Hanna but… “Shoes...how do you feel about heels? I mean you have mostly flats and smaller heels in your wardrobe, right? So...some kinda block heel? Could I get you in stiletto heels?” She’d figure out some way that Emily could help her with the show but till then shopping was a fun way to spend an afternoon. At first, Emily wasn’t sure how to take that. Did she mean that had just taken notice of the shoes in her wardrobe by noticing what she wore, or… did she mean that she remembered what was in her actual wardrobe because she’d seen it? Not here, Emily didn’t think Mona had snuck into her apartment here in Atlantis, but back home was another story. She’d somewhat dressed her style since she was in high school, but the other girl was right. She much preferred a good pair of flats or cute sneaker over a pair of three or four inch stilettos. “I guess you probably could get me to try a pair,” she said. She looked at the dress that was draped over her arm and wondered what would look best. It was a nice dress; not something she would wear to work or every day, but she could see herself slipping it on for a date night with Sara or a night out dancing. The truth was, she probably already had a pair of flats that would go well enough with it to dress it down. Just imagining Sara’s reaction when she would walk up with a pair of high heels was enough to take a second look. “Okay,” She said with a smile. “I’ll try on a pair or two, but no promises.” “I can be pretty persuasive when I want to,” she mused thinking a of a few ideas already of things that would suit her. She figured Emily wanted to look good for her girlfriend. Well, she didn’t know if they were actually saying girlfriend yet but they would soon enough. And Sara was a lot nicer than Paige. Maya had been alright but that had all ended so messily after all. “It’s good that we can do this, isn’t it? Just be normal here? And I’m really genuinely glad you’re happy.” She meant it too. Emily deserved something good in her life. They all did. Okay maybe not Spencer and definitely not Alison. But Hanna, Emily and Aria, they deserved a better life. |
