FLORENCE VASSY & FREDDIE TRUMPER
MAY 3RD
THEIR ROOM
PG
COMPLETE |
Florence suspects that maybe she should have been more surprised by Anatoly's decision. His wife and children would have been in danger if he hadn't gone back to Russia. This way, they could be safe, without him losing his integrity by throwing the match. And yet, she couldn't say that she wasn't hurt by it. When Florence fell, she fell hard. She had fallen for Freddie in a short amount of time eight years previously. And, it had taken her barely any time to fall for Anatoly. And, yet. That had never stopped her from loving Freddie. Sure, he was abrasive. But, he wasn't always that bad. He could be sweet too. And, she knew he loved her. But, sometimes that wasn't enough. Those were the thoughts going through her head as she slowly woke up. Frustrated but calm, until she finally opened her eyes. At first she thought she'd woken up in a hotel room. One looks very much like another sometimes. However, she soon began to panic when she realised that she didn't remember going to sleep. Last thing she remembered was talking to Walter...and then. Then she woke up here. She was trying not to panic, and failing hard when she finally heard the voice from the hologram. "What the hell?" She backed away from the apparition. This place made no sense. Not even with the explanation she was seemingly being given. Once the message had finished, she frowned. Wondering, why me? But, the idea of a new start was appealing. She had no idea what help she could be in a war. All she knew, was Chess. But, her whole life had just been turned upside down back home. She didn't have anything to go back to. And like that, her choice was made, like all of her biggest choices in life, in a moment. And, sighing she decided to explore this new world. Heading out the bedroom into the shared space of the suite. And, stopping in her tracks as soon as she saw an incredibly familiar figure. “Freddie?” A city from myths. A hologram telling him they needed him to stay and help. He had no idea what use he’d be but the intake people had suggested he use his skills to teach. Apart from Chess he’d gone to university. Paid back every penny of the fees out of his winnings. Seven time world champion and now he was teaching statistics. Could be worse. The room was okay. It looked like a lot of other rooms he’d stayed in but it had a permanency to it. He would stay for a while anyway. He’d weighed up his options and there was more here for him than there was at home and besides it didn’t need to be forever if he didn’t want it to be. He was ready to explore, get to know the place, maybe stop by the university. He’d heard someone in the other room, someone new, like him and so stepped out to make sure they weren’t terrible. “...Of course it’s you” he said with a sign. “What goddamn genius thought putting us together was a good away.” Florence took a deep calming breath, before brushing past her ex to put the kettle on. If she was going to have to deal with Freddie, she was going to need tea. “Someone who clearly doesn’t know our history.” She sighed, already feeling a headache coming on. She remembered a time when he hadn’t been this much work. But, maybe she’d been seeing it with rose-tinted glasses. Too full of love and naivete to know any better. “Is it going to be a problem?” He wasn’t sure yet. The click of the kettle showed him quickly how she had decided to cope. Hungarian born she might be but she was all Brit when it came to things like this. Someone had to have been playing a sick sick joke. “It shouldn’t be a problem. Unless you dragged someone else with you from home? I mean I wouldn’t, we’re fighting a war which means there’s an opposing side he can defect to” he said looking around the room. He was almost impressed. Almost. Florence turned to look at him, eyebrow raised. “Already? You couldn’t leave him out of this for longer than a minute?” She looked at the kettle for a minute, before clearly making up her mind, and switching it back off. “If you’re going to start this conversation, I’m going to need something stronger than tea.” She saw a coat that looked like it would fit on a hook, and pulled it on. Throwing the other one at him. “There ought to be a bar around here somewhere. You coming?” She paused at the door to the apartment, looking at him challengingly. Knowing that he never could resist a challenge. “I was just curious was all. Only way this could get any more messed up, throw in a hypocrite Commie.” he said. Though he supposed at least Anatoly had made the right call in the game. He hadn’t thrown it. And, well the Russian had never actually defeated him. Not technically. And here he was with Florence in a shared apartment and it felt like a few years ago. Except drinking and dealing with the drama that had come between them. He shouldn’t go. He should stay where he was. But that look on her face. He couldn’t let her win. “Fine. Can we avoid the one called ‘Dive’ though? Because that hardly conjures up amazing images of class and sophistication.”. Florence grinned in satisfaction at his agreement to go with her. They had a lot to talk about after all. And, it would be better to clear the air, if they were going to be living together for the indefinite future. “I was thinking ‘Cava’, the wine bar. It should have enough sophistication to suit our tastes, I’d imagine.” They had both become far too accustomed to a certain style of living over the years. Both having earned a lot of money from Freddie being World Champion. Not that that was why Florence had worked with him for so long. “I could go for a wine bar. Sounds good enough I suppose.” He figured it sounded okay. And he had to let her have occasional wins. This would be one. He had to get along with her. He had to put the past behind him, the fights, the Russian, his attempt to get her back. He couldn’t have her back. He understood that. He wasn’t stupid. But they had to coexist. “Let's go be sophisticated Vassy” |
