Abe Mazur and Janine Hathaway
Late Februaryish
Picking up Janine for a dinner date

For the first time in a very long time, Janine had actually dressed in something that wasn’t just functional. She’d even gone shopping. A pastime she hadn’t enjoyed in such a long time. And, okay. So she hadn’t exactly gone full out by some people’s standards. But, a short, fitted black dress was dressing up by hers. With heels to make her legs longer, and a small touch of make-up, she looked less severe than she would do normally. Almost like someone who actually enjoyed having fun. And, luckily she was meeting one of the few people, who knew exactly how fun she had the potential to be. She just hadn’t been able to relax like this in a very long time. Still, it had been a while, and she was slightly nervous. Her relationship with Ibrahim was complicated. He was potentially the only man she could have considered giving up her career for. Which, may have been the main reason she’d been terrible at keeping touch after Rose was born. She turned her head when she heard the knock on the door. And, ran the brush through her short red curls one more time, before turning to get the door. “You’re late.” She said, with a smirk. While he didn’t mind so much going on the mission last month, Abe had also been perfectly content staying behind in Atlantis. He enjoyed his job at the bar, and had a nice combination of managing people and information gathering. People tended to reveal a lot more when they had a few drinks in them, and they often revealed even more when they thought that they could get a drink or two for free. Some had caught onto his reasons for offering the free drinks on occasion, but that still didn’t stop them from sharing a secret or two. Abe really liked dealing in the currency of secrets. One person that knew more of his secrets than others was a guardian who happened to charm him just as much as he liked to think that he charmed her twenty some odd years ago. He’d been glad to see Janine Hathaway show up in Atlantis not only because he was glad for Rose to have her mother around but also because a part of him always would care for her. They’d set their dinner for a night after she’d returned from her mission. Abe dressed in one of his usual suits but a bit understated this time rather than incredibly loud. A darker maroon instead of bright red or orange. It was the scarf that made the outfit, shades of dark reds mixed in with yellows and golds to match the earrings always worn in his ears. When he arrived at her door with a single red rose in his hand, he smiled when she opened the door. “You know me,” he said with a smile. “Always fashionably late.” He checked his watch. “By only a few seconds this time, I believe.” Abe leaned in and kissed her cheek before offering her the rose. “You look quite lovely this evening.” Janine happily returned the kiss on the cheek, and only showed mild surprise at the rose. It wasn’t exactly the first time they had done this. Just the first in a number of years. “And, you look subdued.” She returned, as she walked back into the apartment, to dig out a vase for the rose. Not wanting it to wilt while they were out. “It almost makes a girl feel special, to see a guy make an effort.” Once the vase and water was obtained, and the rose was settled in it’s new home. Janine grabbed a black leather jacket, and slipped her hand through Abe’s arm. “Shall we?” “Subdued? You think so? That may be the first time I've ever had someone tell me that.” He smiled knowingly and smoothed down the collar of his shirt as if taking great pains to do so. Abe happened to like his sense of fashion but there was usually a perk in catching people off guard or making sure he left a lasting impression. No one could ever say that Abe Mazur didn't leave a lasting impression one way or another. Taking her arm, he nodded and they both left her apartment. The elevator ride was a short one to the ground floor. “I've made reservations at a nice little Thai restaurant not far away. It's quite nice out, so I thought we might take a stroll there rather than walk, yes?” Given that Janine was the more active of the two of them he didn't anticipate her minding the walk. Once they were outside, he still kept her arm tucked against his side looped into his own. The sun had already begun to set, so he didn't have to worry about the bright rays bothering him. Famous or perhaps infamous in their own ways, neither Abe Mazur had a habit of letting others in very close. Somehow, though, they managed to slip through the cracks of each other's fortresses. It happened many years ago, and Abe knew it could easily happen even now all over again. “After dinner, I'll give you the grand tour of Atlantis. As jarring as it was in the beginning, I must admit that I'm glad to be here.” Abe lightly patted her hand that rested on his arm and smiled. “And the company they're bringing in keeps getting better and better.” |
