As far as missions go, Cleo could say that she had some experience before, but this was on a whole new level. Everything she did in the past seemed trivia.. Even now, sitting by the fire, she couldn’t quite believe she was here. The island itself reminded her of Mako. It was difficult for her not to feel homesick and wish that Bella was here with her. Everyone else on the team seemed so professional and she felt very young and naive in comparison. Regardless, she still wanted to do a good job, and prove herself to be useful. It was what she and Bella talked about after all, if they were going to be here, they could at least put their powers to some good use. The strangest part was using her mermaid form for the first time in front of others. It was especially strange because Christopher was on the mission with her. They had talked about it of course, but this was the first time she had shown anyone what she looked like as a mermaid. Thankfully no one made a big deal about it, and so it made her feel more at ease. Her fears of being kidnapped and experimented on were slowly fading away. Christopher leaned forward, placing another piece of driftwood on the small camp fire he had conjured to keep both he and Cleo warm as the evening set in. Felicia and Marcus had gone off their own way earlier that day, after they had agreed to split into two teams to explore the brace of small islands to the south of Atlantis. Christopher had been quick to volunteer to accompany Cleo, part of him glad to have the time alone with her and another part of him was horrified by the idea that something might happen to her if he wasn’t there to look out for her. She seemed so… innocent. He knew he was probably being silly or condescending or both so he had kept his reasons to himself and, luckily, no one had decided to question him on them so far. Settling back against the thick, fallen tree trunk they were using as a backrest and temporary perimeter for their camp, Christopher picked up the camp mug he’d been using as a teacup, wrapping his long fingers around it and enjoying the warmth that radiated from the hot liquid inside. He’d been able to summon a packet of teabags from the main island which, while loose leaf Dajeeling it most certainly was not, was just what the doctor had ordered and he was starting to feel slightly more like himself again, after the long boat journey out from the main island. Cleo hadn’t ridden in the boat with the rest of them. She’d swum, using her mermaid form to power her through the water and arrive well ahead of the rest of them. Christopher had been enchanted by the sight of her as a mermaid, when they’d arrived to find her drying off on the beach. He’d seen mermaids before, of course, but he’d forgotten quite how exquisite the gleam of water droplets on scales could be, not to mention the fact that the gold brassiere Cleo had been wearing on her top half had left a lot of her warm, light-caramel coloured skin on show and very little else to the imagination. He’d had to remind himself to avert his eyes. Now, sitting by the fire, watching the glow of the flames dance across her face, like sunlight on rippled water, he couldn’t quite force the image of it out of his mind’s eye. He cleared his throat, taking a steadying sip of tea, before remarking, “I never imagined that mermaids could swim quite so fast.” Cleo turned her head and gave him a small smile. “I don’t know if it’s a universal trait for all mermaids, but it’s definitely a perk I don’t mind having. It’s come in handy multiple times.” Of course there were perks, powers always come with perks but it also comes with responsibility and hardship. “Being able to control water too helps, though I admit it’s more effective with I have my other friends with me. They work better when all of us combine our powers.” She just shrugged. As much as she was glad to be here and try to make a difference, she missed Bella and felt awkward being here on her own. “I have to admit though, not having to lie about it all, it’s nice.” |
