It was times like these when Pansy remembered why she’d never liked Care of Magical Creatures class, or going off into the Forbidden Forest. There might not be centaurs and giant spiders here (might), but the woods of Atlantis were cold and dark and wet all the same. Her wand, at least, emitted a glowing light to help her see in the dark, although she had a feeling Lucifer could’ve done without it. She wondered about him sometimes: who he was, what he could do, and why he was out here with her at all. Then again, he was out here being helpful without asking for anything from it, so she didn’t wonder too deeply at his motivations. She just needed those lizards. “All right,” she said, gathering her coat more tightly around her. She had applied some warming charms, but the chill still seeped in. “How do we find these things?” *** Lucifer had nothing better to do today and that was why he had agreed to go out and help Pansy find some lizards. It was something they had talked about when they first met at the club. And now the thing she was plotting would be another step closer to being finalized. But, of course, first they had to find the lizards. He followed not far behind Pansy since she was the one with the light. He probably should have grabbed a flashlight, but it didn’t cross his mind since he didn’t really need one. “Cold?” he asked as he watched her pull her coat around her more tightly. Humans. They really weren’t made for extreme weather. “I don’t know,” he said as he looked around. “I’m not a lizard tamer. I thought you might have some idea.” *** “Aren’t you?” Pansy returned, even though she could see from the loosely casual way he walked that he wasn’t feeling the chill at all. Either he had extremely good warming charms of his own, or he was some freakish thing that couldn’t feel the cold. She held her wand higher, as if that might lure some lizards out of hiding. “You’re the one who told me there were lizards here. I thought you’d know where they are.” *** Lucifer shook his head and said, “not at all.” The cool temperature kind of reminded him of Hell, actually, which was probably why he had no problem with it unlike Pansy who was feeling the chilly air even though her jacket and magic. “Yes, but I never said that I knew exactly where they would be. Now did I?” Nope, he never did. “Don’t they hang around rocks and trees?” It was a guess. That’s all it really was. He was no animal expert. *** Oh, brilliant. Now she was in the dark and cold woods, looking for slithery things with someone who was turning out to be just as slithery. She scowled at him. “Well, you certainly gave the impression that you knew.” Because she certainly didn't, and she was practical enough not to waste time on a fruitless endeavour. She'll make an attempt to find the lizards, and if nothing showed up on five minutes, she was going to go back to town and get herself a hot chocolate. *** “I said we will probably be able to find them out here. I never said I had the know-how on them.” Lucifer lived in Los Angeles before he was pulled into Atlantis. It wasn’t like lizards just roamed around a city. Not to mention it wasn’t like he did this on a regular bases. He only agreed to this because he really wanted to see what Pansy would do with them. He moved past her and just walked and looked. There had to be some around. And after a few minutes he saw one hanging around on a rock pile. “Look,” he said as he pointed to the tiny creature. “There’s one.” *** It was clear by his helpful tone and expectant expression that he had no intention of helping her actually catch the blasted thing. In fact, he looked very much like he was going to entertain himself watching her make the attempt. Damn him. Grumbling, she lowered her wand. The cold, blue light flickered and then disappeared -only to be replaced by a jet of red light as she pointed her wand at the lizard. There was a puff and a pop, and in the place of the lizard there was a nice, lizard-skinned belt. Which still had legs and was wriggling about. She went over and picked it up by the buckle. “Let’s be quick. I don’t know how long this spell will last.” *** Lucifer just smiled as Pansy grumbled. He found one, didn’t he? Wasn’t that his job? To help find the lizards. He never said he was going to actually collect them. Plus he thought she would have something to put them in anyway. So, shouldn’t she be the one to snag them. And, there was the whole magic thing. Lizards probably couldn’t outrun magic. “Well, look at that. A new fashion trend,” he jokingly said. “How many do we need to find?” he asked as he started to slowly walk and look around for more of the tiny creatures. *** “I was looking for enough to fill a vat,” Pansy said. She carefully picked her path to follow him, the lizard belt pinched between her thumb and forefinger. “But it's cold, so enough to fill a bucket would do. I can just enlarge the creatures.” It was dark here, even with the glow from her wand. She had no idea how he was finding these lizards, but as long as he was able, she wouldn't question it too much. She was very good at not questioning shady things. It was what had kept her alive all this time. *** “Ah.” That was going to be a lot of lizards then. They might be out there for a very long while if she was planning to fill a vat with the small creatures. Or not. “Will your devious plan still be able to work with half of the lizards?” He had caught sight of another one just as the light from her want passed over it. He reached down and quickly snatched it before it could take off. “Here,” he said as he held it out to her. *** At least he was helping catch the critters now. Pansy turned his victim into a belt as well and looped it over her arm. “I’ll have to make it work. I didn’t take into consideration how terribly uncomfortable this would be.” And this was why Pansy would never become an evil mastermind. She didn’t always think through her nefarious plots. They looked some more, until the belts weighed down on Pansy’s arm and her warming spell started to wear off. “I think we’ve got enough to work with.” *** Of course he was helping. He did say that he would. Plus it was quicker to grab the little buggers instead of having to point them out to Pansy. “I bet the next time you plot something out, you’ll take everything in consideration, hm?” He had found a few more and handed them off to Pansy. Not long after that Pansy had said she had enough. “Let’s get out of here then.” She was more uncomfortable being out there than he was. But, that didn’t mean he wanted to spent the entire night out in the woods. *** “Probably not,” Pansy admitted, and then she flash Lucifer a bright, mischievous smile. She might be a terrible evil mastermind, but at least she owned it. She adjusted the position of their bounty on her arm. “Thanks for coming out.” He hadn’t had to, really, and even if he hadn’t been running around after the lizards to fetch them for her, he’d been a great help in spotting them in the first place. The first phase of her plan was working out. “Let’s get out of here indeed. I think you’ve earned yourself a drink.” *** |
