ROSE HATHAWAY & DIMITRI BELIKOV JANUARY 14, 2017 MEDICAL - LISSA'S ROOM pg - injured character & LANGUAGE Complete |
Rose didn't actually remember the walk to medical. One moment she was reading the message from Jemma and the next thing she remembered, she was standing in the middle of a cold, white washed room while the doctor, the friend she was starting to remember through the dreams she's just started having, told her as gently as possible that Lissa might not ever wake up. Her normal attention to detail was absent as a rushing in her ears kept her from hearing half of what was being said and she only nodded mutely before turning to look at her best friend. Lissa was even paler than usual and she wished all she had to do was give her a little blood. She wished there was something, anything she could do to fix this. There wasn’t. After a few moments, she pulled out her phone and typed out a message to the people close to them, to her. She answered the questions as well as she could and even managed to fake a little classic Rose-logic for Dimitri before giving in to the admission that she needed him. Just you, she typed into her phone before she shoved it back into her pocket and turned her attention back to the machines that helped keep Lissa stable. It didn't even matter that she now knew it wasn’t Lissa’s mind in there. The body swap wouldn't last forever and she didn't know how to share the real Lissa’s optimism that it would be okay. Not when she could still remember Dimitri dying in her arms. If Breck could take him away from her so many times, Atlantis wouldn't be any less cruel. This is what she got for feeling a sense of stability and safety here, despite almost losing a good friend to this war just last month. She sat in the chair by Lissa’s bed and for once Rose was silent. Her eyes were moist and red, but she refused to let herself actually cry. Letting herself fall apart would be like admitting this was real and the part of her that had any hope was desperate for it to be just another dream she can wake up from. It wasn't until she heard the soft clicking of the door and the swish of the duster that she stood and turned and the first tears started to leak from her eyes. She didn't say a word as she looked up to meet Dimitri’s worried gaze. She knew she didn't have to. It wasn’t hard to find someone to watch Ivan. Anyone that knew Rose and Dimitri knew that he would want to be by her side and as soon as he was sure their son was settled, he was on his way to Medical. Someone pointed him in the right direction and then he saw them. Lissa lying on the bed, almost the same color as the sheets she was on and Rose, her face lined with worry. Dimitri walked over and rested a hand gently on her shoulder. “I’m here, Roza,” he said quietly. “Has there been any change at all?” “It’s not her,” she said quietly without turning to look at him. “That Master guy is in her body. She’s in his. It’s not really her.” That didn’t keep her from worrying, of course. It didn’t make it any easier to see her lying there, but Rose wasn’t very good at admitting it when she wasn’t okay, even to Dimitri. She couldn’t bring herself to admit out loud that she was terrified Lissa’s body was going to die. He’d heard about the body switch but he hadn’t known that Lissa had been affected by it. “So where is he? The Master I mean. Shouldn’t he be here too so that they can switch back?” It was confusing and Dimitri wasn’t sure how this had happened or how it could be fixed. “Is there anyone that knows how to put people back into the right bodies?” He didn’t know the Master although he’d seen him on the network but did know that he wanted him to put Lissa back where she belonged. If her body died… no, they couldn’t let that happen. He took a seat next to Rose and reached for her hand. “I don’t suppose anyone knows how to change people back.” “He.. she’s on the way. Lissa in the Master’s body.” Rose didn’t know what good it was going to do, besides probably freaking her out to see her own body in such bad shape. It wasn’t like she could heal herself or there was anything she could do. There wasn’t much any of them could do. They were helpless. She slipped her hand into his, threading their fingers together and kept staring at her unconscious - at least for the moment - best friend. The doctors had done what they could for now and she was resting. Lissa, Rose knew, was hopeful they would be able to heal her body, but Rose knew some things couldn’t be fixed. She knew first hand that sometimes the people you loved were taken from you no matter how badly you wanted them to stay. “I can’t imagine what that must feel like. To be inside someone else’s body yet have your own thoughts.” Dimitri had seen some strange things, indeed the life that he and Rose lived was not something that a human could even comprehend but this? “What caused it? The body swapping, I mean. I know there were others, I saw the posts on the network.” “I don’t know,” Rose admitted. “It happened at Breck before. Weird stuff like this happened all the time. Usually, it just wore off on it’s own. It probably will here, too.” She was honestly a lot less worried about that than about what bad shape Lissa’s body was in. And she was powerless to help either situation. Dimitri looked at Lissa lying there, finding it hard to believe that even though he was seeing the face of the young woman he knew, it wasn’t her at all. “Can she heal herself when she comes back to her body?” He knew that had to be what was on Rose’s mind and he hoped that it could be done. Rose without Lissa would be the worst thing that could happen. He couldn’t even begin to imagine what it would be like if one of them lost the other. Rose forgot for a minute how much earlier Dimitri was than her. Spirit had still been such a new concept for them at the point he was from and they hadn’t known a lot about what it was or wasn’t capable of. “No,” she said, shaking her head. “Spirit users can’t heal themselves. Adrian could do it if he went off his meds, but he’s not in his own body, either. I’m not sure who else...” She trailed off, bit wanting to admit how hopeless it seemed. He put his arm around her and kissed her hair. It was a simple gesture and certainly not one that could make Rose’s pain go away even if Dimitri wished that it could. The thought of losing Lissa was something he’d never considered and he knew that Rose would never be the same if that happened. “Then all we can do is wait,” he said quietly. “And believe that things will work out. Lissa will return to her body and she will get better. Even if that seems really hard right now.” “I hate waiting,” Rose muttered. She leaned into Dimitri, laying her head on his shoulder and letting out a sigh. If anyone would understand how hard it was for her to just sit around and be completely powerless to fix this, it would be him and she knew that. It didn’t change anything, but knowing he understood did make her feel a little better. |
