There was something almost palpable in the air; something was coming, the end of what had been their status quo for the past almost 3 years. She and Becker had really started this journey together, even before Atlantis when they'd worked together in Breck. He'd been her partner (professionally, at least), her confidant, her friend for a long time now. The question of what she would do when this was over loomed somewhere in her mind, but she knew from the time they'd seen kids show up from multiple futures that winning wasn't certain.
And whatever was building here the last week or two, she was certain one of those futures was almost upon them. She was also certain they would fight like hell to make damn sure it wasn't one where COS won.
She'd somehow talked Becker into a short coffee break and she stood with him now on the roof of the base, coffees in hand, looking out over the city they'd lived and worked in for the past few years. Somehow, after all this time, Atlantis felt more like home than where she'd come from. Silently, she handed him one of the coffees. She felt like she should speak, but she didn't quite know what to say.
Standing there it didn’t seem real, he kept telling the dogs everything was okay but he didn’t believe it. Nothing was okay, but he wasn’t showing it. He had nearly punched Matt when he’d asked a question a day or so before he found himself standing looking out over the city. He was mildly aware that Carter seemed unsure if she should speak or not but he didn’t have anything he could say. He wasn’t the sort to talk about his feelings much and over the last three years, he’d started to hide them more.
“I suppose we should be getting back to it,” he said after a minute or so more passed.
“One more minute,” Sharon said, knowing full well that he could make it an order if he wanted, but it felt somehow important to take a moment or two and take all of this in. Maybe it was intuition, maybe it was dread over how many more losses they’d see before it was over or maybe the fresh air just felt good. Maybe she just needed to look out over the city and remind herself of what they were fighting for.
Becker turned his head towards Sharon and raised an eyebrow. He considered saying they really needed to get back to it, but instead he just shrugged a little bit and allowed a moment or two to pass before speaking again.
“I think I’ll take a holiday when this war is over,” he mentioned offhandedly. He would have preferred to take it with Octavia, but she was gone. “Take the dogs, live in a cabin.”
Sharon nodded. “Sounds like heaven to me.” It felt like they’d been doing this for a long time. Going on 3 years, if you didn’t count their work in Breck. A break would be nice. A cabin in the woods or a nice house on the beach. Maybe she’d retire to Mako when it was all over.
Becker was just about to open his mouth to say something else when alerts started to pop up all over the place and he could feel his device and hear Sharon’s go off. He shut his eyes for just a second before opening them again and looking down.
“Attacks,” he said simply nodding to her without saying anything else.
“Let’s go to work.” Sharon nodded at Becker, kind of a see you later, not knowing this was the last time they would speak.
