He hadn’t let the gravity of what happened the day of the attack hit him yet. His teams had been ambushed, and by the time the dust cleared, more than half of his agents were unconscious or were injured badly enough that they needed to get to medical immediately or they’d likely not make it. Even as the news began coming in while he waited in medical to see what he could do or how badly the others were injured, he suppressed any what he probably should have been feeling with each name. Even in light of the defeat of Snow and COS, Bucky compartmentalized and stayed focused solely on where he was needed to make sure he didn’t lose anyone else, especially his own agents.
In the days after the fight, Bucky still kept his mind preoccupied. He daily stopped by medical to check on the others and actively helped with some of the clean up along with a few of his own patrols to see if he came across any other COS agents on the run. He may not have been a part of an official group to search, but that wasn’t going to stop him from doing it himself here and there. Between medical, clean up, and a few patrols, he made sure he was always on the move. Always occupied with something other than being still and letting his thoughts take over.
Bucky was a soldier, an operative, and he knew how to shut out his emotions in order to finish a job. The problem this time was that there was no end goal here. Those in medical eventually woke up or were released. Clean up and rebuild was well on its way. All remaining COS agents were found and taken into custody. The tasks he’d assigned himself were running out, and Bucky wasn’t looking forward to when it did.
He slept but just enough to get by. He’d woken up early for a run, a normal occurrence for him, but he went harder, faster, and longer. He ended up on the outskirts of the Village where some buildings were still mostly rubble or not far from it. His breathing was hard, and he leaned with one hand against a nearby tree. Taking a deep breath, he began walking down the street and looked for somewhere he could start clearing more debris.
