He was trying not to panic. Trying and failing. Just days after he came to this place, everyone seemed to remember everything that he already knew. It was a lot to take in. Peter couldn't imagine what it was like waking up suddenly and remembering five years of things. Five years of terrible things, really. They weren't all happy memories. But, the first person and really the most important person who he was worried about was Tony Stark.
Ever since coming here, Peter had been living with him. It had been amazing and surreal to live with the man whom he respected more than anything. On top of that, though, he had been adjusting to the fact that everyone here knew who he was. It was a little weird, Peter had to admit, but also a bit of a relief. He didn't have to keep his identity a secret anymore. No more sneaking off or hiding things. Granted, he hoped nothing serious would happen here, but if it did, Peter was ready.
What he wasn't ready for was not being able to reach Tony. As soon as people got the news of what happened, Peter went looking for Tony. Learning that you die, well, that wasn't easy. He shouldn't have been surprised. But it didn't help his own frantic pacing. The floor was creaking by the time he finally heard a young voice call out, asking for Tony.
Peter stopped dead in his tracks, dressed still in pajama bottoms and a t shirt, and he scratched the top of his head anxiously for a moment. “Oh, uh, hi! You're Morgan, right? I remember you. I'm Peter. Peter Parker. I'm, well, I'm a friend of your dad's. I bet he'll be so happy to see you. Are you hungry? I know I would be. Maybe I can get your dad to bring us some lunch, yeah? Hang on, let me see here…”
He was rambling about a million miles aminute, voice desperately he tried to figure out how to handle the sudden appearance of a young girl and the disappearance of her father. He knew one way he could try. Frantically, Peter fumbled for his phone. It nearly tumbled from his hand as he tried to pick it up in a hurry, but he managed, grinning to the young girl like nothing at all was wrong.
Texting faster than a teenager who just got a date with the hottest girl in school, Peter sent out one desperate attempt to message Tony. He hadn't yet, not since speaking with Cap briefly over the network.
“ -Mr. Stark. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. Bring up all those memories for everyone. I really didn't mean to. I know you needed space. I don't know how this place works but it's a little weird that you all remember a few days after I get here. Cap said so. Not about the memories. But maybe that you just need time. But, well, there's someone here who needs you. And, you know, you really should look after your kids more. Can I heat up a cheeseburger in the microwave? Because I think she's hungry and it's that or mac and cheese, because I really don't know how to cook and I don't know if you have any jelly or not.” Peter took a deep breath, managing another grin to the young girl before him, hoping like hell that his message would work.
Tony didn’t really know what he’d been doing for the past 24 hours. He hadn’t slept, that was for damn sure - he didn’t feel tired, though. He just had a headache and a constant, neverending squeezing in his chest which he supposed was something that only a man who was the very embodiment of ‘borrowed time’ in Atlantis could feel. He sat on the edge of the beach, overlooking the ocean as the tide came in and went out again over the course of the day just...listening. Even when the sun rose over the horizon and people started to come out, Tony didn’t budge - they wouldn’t notice him unless they went out of their way looking for him, but it was a nice day. Eventually, that brought people to the beach and so he went further inland, trying to process everything that had happened. Even with a mind like his, he just...couldn’t.
Death. His death. The only condolence was that it was him and not somebody else - Pepper was alive, Bruce was alive, Thor, Steve, Peter. Everybody but him and Nat seemed to have made it out of this relatively unscathed as far as physical issues went, anyway. He was injured from the fight with Thanos and from picking up the Infinity Stones and he knew he should go to the hospital and get himself checked out, but- for now, he just wanted to feel the dull ache. He wanted a reminder that he was alive.
He decided that he should at least message Nat if nobody else and so at midday Tony turned his phone on, grimacing a little at the sudden influx of messages - the only ones he decided to pay any mind to at that moment were Peter’s, his eyes widening as he looked over the content. She? He couldn’t mean Morgan, could he?
Tony wasn’t willing to take chances. He all but sprinted back to the house, shoving the door open to be met with an armful of Morgan, who launched herself at him as soon as he opened it. He winced because goddamn kid but he picked her up, staring over her shoulder at Peter. “...Pete? How long has this been- what? What the hell’s going on here?”
He was here. Peter felt his own heart beating loudly in his chest as he watched the young girl run over to Tony. He didn't even try to stop her, because this was her dad, after all. He stared over at the two of them, debating what to do or what to say. A million different words flooded his mind right then, but Peter could think of only one thing to do.
He took two steps forward and did what he told Steve Roger's he wanted to do. He hugged Tony and Morgan both. He pulled them in close, taking in the sight that Tony was actually still alive and well. "You're back, that's all. People started remembering and I didn't mean to make it happen, Mr. Stark. It seems a little weird that everyone else gained their memories. Dr. Strange said he knew, too, but he has special powers because of some eye thing so he already knew. I'm from after, too. I mean, it all happened to me. I was there when you...I mean...when you...oh hey, that's weird. I think it's raining in here, because I can feel water falling and I don't know where it's coming from…oh."
Crying. His brain caught up with his mind that was going a million miles a minute as Peter started crying. The last time he had seen Tony like this, looking just like this, he had died a few moments after. No. No, no, no. He wouldn't let it happen again. It wasn't fair. To just get here, to give him those memories and to have this happen to just lose him again? Atlantis wouldn't do that, would they? And what about Morgan? Happy wasn't here, which was a real shame, but Morgan would be all alone here. This place didn't have a right to do that. It wasn't fair. He knew that was life sometimes, but that didn't help the onslaught of tears as he hugged both Tony and Morgan really close.
“Make it happen?” Tony’s brain was already horrendously overworked after the events of the past day, his eyebrow raising as he tried to work through that thought. How could Peter have made this happen? He was as much of a victim as this bullshit as anybody else here. “You didn’t do anything to make this happen, Pete-” and then Peter was crying and hugging him and Morgan, who had buried her head into his shoulder because- yeah, this had to be pretty traumatising for her.
This was part of why he’d had to vanish. Even now, he didn’t know how to handle somebody crying over him because he had died. He only had one arm free because the other one was holding Morgan but he wrapped it around Peter’s back, tugging him in closer with a sigh. “It’s okay. Both of you, I’m fine, see?” okay, maybe he wasn’t fine. He was injured and achy and he needed to go to the hospital, but he had Morgan and Peter to look after now. Peter already had much better and much more stable parent figures at home in the shape of his Aunt and even Happy, to some extent, but they weren’t here and Tony wasn’t going to let him feel like shit on his behalf. “Breathe. I’m here and I’m okay. Not going to die any time soon, right?”
It took some time. The tears didn't quiet down right away. His emotions were going everywhere right now. Grateful that Tony was here. Worried for him. Missing him, even though he was right here. And the emotional anxiety he had felt since showing up here, knowing what he knew but deciding not to say anything to the rest of their friends. It wasn't his place to share some of those secrets, after all. After several minutes, though, Peter sniffled a few more times and he finally seemed to settle.
Besides. It took one look at the young girl in Tony's arm to realize he should probably be strong for her, too. "I know. You're here," he finally managed, stepping back and just breathing in for a moment. He reached out and ruffled the girl's hair, trying to out on a brave face with a grin. It was a bit wobbly, but passable. "I didn't tell you before. I knew. I just...I kept it to myself. I don't know how I did it. Maybe because everything else was happening. I'm glad she's here, though. Morgan, right? Hi, Morgan. I'm Peter." He looked back up at Tony, eyes slightly red from crying now.
Tony rubbed his back with one hand as Peter cried, just… Letting him get it all out on his shoulder. This wasn't something any of them could heal from easily. Even years later, Tony had nightmares of Peter fading away in his hands and Stephen vanishing in front of him, waking up feeling like he was choking on dust in the air. Even now, he knew it wouldn't be fixed. He had Morgan, Stephen, Rhodey and Peter. He didn't need a whole lot else in his life to feel secure.
Morgan lifted her head from Tony's shoulder, looking over at Peter curiously. "You're the spider," she stated matter-of-factly. "I know it's a secret. I'm really good at keeping secrets, though. Daddy broke Mommy's favourite vase and blamed it on the wind."
"That's not being good at secrets, kid. That's telling literally everybody you meet except for Mommy."
She was smart. Definitely Tony's daughter. Peter managed a watery smile, even a half hearted chuckle as he looked back at the young girl. "Yeah. That's me. Your friendly neighborhood Spiderman. Although, apparently it's not so much a secret here. I guess everyone seems to know who I am." He shrugged, looking up sheepishly at Tony.
"And for the record, Aunt May knows now. She took it better than I thought." It was still hard to believe everything that had happened. Peter realized that MJ would probably find all of this surprising and he wondered how she was taking it, if she remembered. He'd have to ask her and find out eventually. But right now? This was the most important thing.
"I'm glad you're here, you know. I was trying to make this girl something to eat before you showed up. I usually stopped by a diner back home. The shop owner is pretty nice. He has the most friendly cat there, too." Peter knew he was rambling, but silence didn't suit him usually. "Think we can order pizza or something? Does Atlantis even have a pizza place? Man, that would just suck if they didn't."
“Atlantis has pizza, Peter,” Tony rolled his eyes with a little smile, raising his eyebrows at the mention of Morgan. “Well, we can figure something out in terms of food. She likes pretty much everything she shouldn’t like and a whole lot of fruit and veg, which we try to stick to, right?” he questioned, nudging Morgan up in his arms a little bit. She nodded sagely at Peter and wriggled down and out of Tony’s arms.
“I have a chart. Me and Daddy have to try and get five fruits and vegetables a day ‘cause it’s better for you that way.”
