Steve finished dressing up after taking a shower and went back to where Peggy was. He smiled lovingly at her and pressed a soft kiss on her lips. He liked it when she spent the night with him. Or vice versa. Spending time with her was all it mattered, especially after getting their new memories. He had a new chance to be with Peggy and he wasn’t wasting it.
He sat down on the couch next to her and looked at the TV. There was some silly reality tv show about weddings on and it made Steve think. “We should get married,” he said, looking down at Peggy. Yes, it was incredibly blunt and sudden, but it was the truth. Steve have been wanting to get married with her for a long time. He even got the ring tucked in a drawer in his room. Maybe he should’ve gotten that first before asking her the question, but oh well. What was done was done.
Peggy sat up a little and turned to look at Steve, slightly surprised at his comment because it felt so off hand and casual, not necessarily what she might have expected from him. "Yes," she said without thinking too much about it. "We should."
She meant it too, in the same way she knew he meant it when he said it. It was the natural next step, one that she hadn't considered she ever had a chance to take until arriving here in Atlantis, and more, once she and Steve had their updated memories. "That's a wonderful idea."
A smile spread on Steve’s lips and he leaned in, pressing a kiss on her lips as he caressed her cheek. He suddenly pulled back, as if he had remembered something important. And he did. The ring. “I’ll be right back.”
He rushed to his room and grabbed the hidden ring, coming back a moment later. “I know it’s rushed and sudden, but it feels right, doesn’t it?” He said, smiling at her. “We should do this the right way, though.”
Peggy reached out for him, smiling, as he pulled away. "Wait, where are you going?" she asked. She sat up better on the couch, turning so she could watch him disappear into his room.
"Is there a right way?" Peggy laughed a little, looking at him expectantly.
“Well, yes,” he chuckled. He might be a little old fashioned, but it was the right way to do this, even if he had sort of already asked her the question.
He got on one knee in front of her and opened a little black velvet box where the ring was . “Margaret Carter, will you marry me?” He asked with a bright smile on his face.
Peggy touched his shoulder, let her fingers brush the side of his neck. "Of course I will, Steve." Her smile matched his and she leaned in to kiss him quickly. "I've been hoping you'd ask me."
“Sorry it took me so long,” he said with a smile. He grabbed her hand gently and slid the ring on her finger. He looked at it and pressed a soft kiss on her hand before looking at her. “Perfect fit.”
"It's a little loose," she said, truthfully, because the truth just comes out like that, has been all morning. "But I love it." She kissed him again. "And I love you, too."
A light frown covered his forehead when she mentioned it was a little loose. Damn, he really thought he had gotten her size right. “I’m sorry. I’ll get it fixed tomorrow.” He kissed her back, his hands framing her face gently. “I love you too, Peggy.”
She leaned into him, unable to keep the smile off her face. She tugged him back up onto the couch with him and leaned against him. "No need to apologize," Peggy said sincerely. "How long have you had the ring?"
He grinned and wrapped his arm around her once he sat on the couch. He pressed a small kiss on her temple before speaking. “A month,” he replied honestly. “Bucky came with me to help me pick the perfect ring.”
"I'm surprised you waited this long, if you've had it for a month already. I would have been too impatient." And honestly, she kind of was. It had been on the tip of her tongue a few times to broach the subject with him. But she was often just as old-fashioned as he was, a product of their time even if she was a strong woman standing on her own. "I'm very glad you finally asked me, Steve."
“I was waiting for the right moment, the perfect time... And I guess it was today,” he chuckled. He hadn’t thought about asking her today precisely, but something about that tv show just made click in his head. “I’m glad I finally did too,” he admitted. “Is it bad that I want to be married already?”
Of course he'd been thinking about the perfect time. She wouldn't have expected anything else from him. She rubbed his arm. "Well, you know me. I don't need anything extravagant, so we can do whatever you'd like."
He nuzzled her hair lightly and smiled against it, glad she didn’t seem to think he was rushing things. “Let’s tell our people and we’ll do something small, just with the family.” He didn’t feel like doing anything big, to be honest.
"I like that," she said, and she absolutely meant it. Something small and simple, with the two of them and whomever else they wanted, their found family and friends here in Atlantis. "It doesn't have to be a big to-do at all."
He nodded and kisses her softly. “I love you, Peggy Carter.”
