Nat had been promising to come and visit Steve’s construction site and since she had some time off this afternoon, she made her way there, stopping for a moment to watch him work. He’d certainly come a long way, it looked almost done but never having built a log cabin, she really had no idea. “Hey Daniel Boone,” she called. “How’s it going?” Steve had been working on the log cabin every day since he got the urge to build one. The time he wasn’t spending with Peggy or at work, he used it to work on it, and he had done a really good job so far. It was just him for the most part, but sometimes friends had come to help, which was really appreciated. “Hello, Mrs. Hawkeye,” he teased as he put the hammer down. “Well, I don’t think it’s going to fall on us, so I’d say it’s going well.” “Mrs. Hawkeye, I hadn’t thought about that one,” she laughed. “Peter Parker was asking me how we were going to change our name. I voted for Romabarton but he liked Bartonoff which to me sounds like you’re telling your dog to get off your sofa. So I’m pretty sure we’re not going to do any weird changes. Like hyphenating. You’d be writing all day.” She walked closer and laid a hand on the door frame, her wedding ring catching the sunlight and she glanced at it and smiled. “I still can’t get used to it. I keep thinking it’s one of those Atlantis things but if it is, I don’t think anybody else would have been there. And thank you for not telling us we were insane.” “Bartonoff? I like that one,” he said with a small chuckle. “Mr and Mrs Bartonoff. Has a nice ring to it,” he said teasingly. “If I had told you you were insane, I would’ve had to tell myself the same for waiting for Peggy all these years -- decades,” he corrected himself. “You two deserve to be happy.” They all had been through a lot, but he felt Natasha had carried so much on her shoulders, things she didn’t have to carry but did anyway, she deserved a happy ending. “Clint will probably look at me like I have three heads if I told him that,” she laughed. “Which means I have to do it just to see that.” She leaned forward and rested her chin on her hands. “I didn’t think we’d end up like this at all. I can’t remember if you were here or if it was another version of you, there’s been at least one more since I’ve been here, but Laura came last spring when we had that big influx of people, some kind of glitch or something in intake. I just let it be for as long as she was here, it wasn’t as if he and I were anything more than friends at that point but I had been hoping even if I didn’t way anything,” she gave a little shrug. “She went back and I fully expected him to go with her but he didn’t. We didn’t talk about why that was of course because it’s us but after all of us ended up in Breckentale last summer as different people, that kind of sealed the deal.” she straightened up and leaned against the edge of the door. “And i’m glad it did.” It had been hard, hiding her feelings but she’d had a lot of experience doing it. “I was wondering if we’d ever have a Peggy that stayed because I wanted that for you so bad. I know you dated Other people but I always wanted it to be her when all was said and done.” “I have a vague memory of Laura being here, so I think it was me.” He couldn’t remember all that happened during the first few months of him being in Atlantis. It had been rather intense. Steve smiled at her. “It was always her, Peggy. I couldn’t be with anyone that wasn’t her... I mean, I’m building a damn log cabin for us,” he chuckled. “That’s a pretty big commitment, building a log cabin,” she grinned. “I knew there were plans and books and things like that out there but I never knew anyone who actually built one. Of course this one is probably going to be a lot different than the original ones. Unless you’re really going back to nature and planning on no electricity or indoor plumbing. I might be crazy but I think Peggy might draw the line at that. I would.” Nat looked around, thinking not for the first time how beautiful Atlantis was. It was a good place to build a future, she couldn’t argue with that. “It’s really beautiful here, isn’t it? Maybe when this thing ends, we’ll be your neighbors. Clint would love it I’m sure and I could bring my mini-dow home from the petting zoo.” She had been teased so many times about her mini-cow but she didn’t care. Whatever had compelled her to adopt it, she had no complaints. Edwina was pretty adorable. “Blame Atlantis for making me wanting to build one in the first place,” he said. He knew he could’ve stopped after the urge went down, but he thought it could be a good project. Something that was truly just his and Peggy’s in this place that was now his home. “It’ll have electricity and indoor plumbing. I’m not a caveman,” he laughed. “It is,” he nodded, his lips curling in a content smile as he looked around. “It’d be nice to have Edwina around. How is she doing? I haven’t visited her in a while.” “She’s good. There are enough kids around now that she gets plenty of attention so she’s loving that. God I never thought I’d be attached to a cow of all things but she’s cute.” Natasha laughed. “This place suits you. Not just the whole pioneer thing but Atlantis in general. Of course I know a lot of that is because of Peggy and it’s nice to know that even back home you end up together. If I’d been in your shoes, I would have done the same thing. I would have taken that step.” Sadly she didn’t have that option but here she had a whole new life, a life that she had come to love even if sometimes she got frustrated with things. She and Clint were together at last and they were happy. He missed his kids, she knew that, but he was there as well as here so they weren’t without him. The thought of that made Nat feel better because she never wanted Clint to feel that she had kept him away from his kids, she’d never do that. Steve laughed with her. “I never thought I would be building a log cabin in Atlantis, but here we are. This place makes us do and be things we never thought we would.” Hearing her saying that made Steve smile. She hadn’t been there to see it back in their world, to know he finally got to live his life. “Thanks, Nat. Means a lot coming from you,” he said softly, smiling at her. “You want to grab some food? I’m kind of hungry.” “Yes I would love some food, I got off at lunch today and I didn’t eat before I came up here so food sounds good,” she stood up and brushed off the seat of her pants. “It looks great Steve. Very cozy. You should be proud.” Steve looked at the log cabin and smiled. “Thanks. I am pretty proud of it.” He turned to Nat and started heading back to town. “Let’s get some food.” |
