Mara had guessed that she was pregnant before she ever went to the doctor. Something just felt different but she couldn’t have told you what it was. Once she sat down and thought about what she already knew from the girls about when their brother had been born, she made an appointment to see Dr. McCoy to get a confirmation. Not that she needed it but she wanted to hear it from a doctor and also to find out what this would mean for her work in Atlantis. Once she knew that, she would tell Cassian and she couldn’t wait. She had planned to tell him after the party they hosted for Star Wars day but the Arena had happened and everyone was tied up in one way or another. Dr. McCoy contacted her and told her that arrangements had been made and she’d be staying on base and monitoring what was going on. Cassian didn’t find it odd when she told him, she just said that they needed some extra hands and then for the next several days they barely saw each other. If they did make it home to sleep, chances were good that the other one wouldn’t be there and thankfully Mara hadn’t been feeling sick in the mornings and when she did, she had gone to the library to find some Jedi healing techniques for morning sickness so Cassian wouldn’t figure it out. When everything went back to normal (or as normal as anything in Atlantis ever was), and everyone was given a day off, Mara made plans to tell him. She wanted to do something special but she was so tired from all the hours that she’d been putting in that she couldn’t think of anything. The best way was just to tell him because that’s how she did everything, shoot from the hip but it didn’t mean she couldn’t have a little fun with it. They had been lying down, taking a nap and she turned onto her side and looked at him. “Do you like your middle name? Because I do and I don’t know anyone else named Jeron but I guess we could change it. We don’t have to keep it just because that’s what we called him in the future.” She bit her lip, trying to keep from laughing, wondering what he would say when he processed what she had just said. The last several days had been stressful, with so many of their own trapped in the arena. Cassian wouldn't have needed to be close friends with those who had been taken to be worried about them or feel the pressure to bring them home. As it was, Jyn had been in the arena and while he knew she could take care of herself, yes, he had worried. There were also two members of Team 5 in there, which had left his own teams light as they searched for some kind of clue as to where this arena was. Needless to say, there hadn’t been a lot of downtime in the last two weeks. Now that Atlantis had given everyone a mandatory day off, he was enjoying a lazy morning in bed with his wife. The hand that had been idly playing with her hair stilled as he took in her words. Like Mara, Cassian had heard enough from their grown daughters to realize they weren’t far away from when their first born should be arriving. That Mara could be pregnant with him now wasn’t the shock it might have been if the twins weren’t here, but Cassian did smile at the prospect. Being a father wasn’t something he’d thought he would ever have, even before Scarif, but since meeting Shania and Shamara, he’d found that it was one of the very best things in the world. He couldn’t be happier to learn he’d have the chance again, this time as the parent to an actual baby. “You’re pregnant,” he guessed. He wasn’t exactly shocked by the news, but the big smile on his face should have told her he was thrilled. “Yep.” she grinned and leaned in to kiss him. “I found out at the beginning of May, I was going to tell you after the Star Wars party we had and then all hell broke loose the next day. I went to Dr.McCoy and he reassigned me so I wasn’t patrolling. I never found the right time to tell you so I decided to wait until it was over. I’ll be working with Reyna doing training until the baby’s born so you’ve lost a team member I’m afraid. You don’t look too upset about that though.” she laughed, he hadn’t stopped smiling since she’d told him and that made her very happy. “It’s funny, we knew it was going to happen but still, it’s amazing knowing there’s a person inside me.” “It’s one thing to know it was coming and another to be facing it,” Cassian pointed out. Maybe their unborn son didn’t quite have the element of surprise, thanks to their daughters, but that didn’t make it any less exciting to know his arrival was imminent. If anything, the experience with their grown up daughters made the prospect of fatherhood a little less terrifying and maybe that made it easier to just enjoy the moment without too much anxiety about being a new father. The twins were so great that he knew he and Mara were going to be good parents. Propping himself up slightly on his arm, he looked down at his wife and smiled. “How do you want to celebrate this?” he asked her as he used his free hand to push some of her hair out of her face. “Should we do something with the girls or would you rather it just be the two of us today?” Mara smiled up at him, still not quite believing that this was happening. While her life in her own world took a different path, she couldn’t imagine being here without Cassian. He had gotten a second chance at life and she was so grateful that she could share it with him and their children. “Just us today,” she said. “And then we can do something with the girls tomorrow. We should grab as much time as we can by ourselves before we have a little person in the house.” She rested her hand on her still flat stomach. “I found a thing where you can figure out due dates and it says January 11 is it but I figure anytime in January we should be ready. Who knows if things change here and we have him on a different day from when we had him before. It doesn’t matter to me, I’m just excited.” Leaning over, she kissed him. “I love you so much. You are the best surprise that I’ve ever gotten.” |
