May mission
“I’m telling you, I swear we’ve done this before,” Taisia said as she was running across a bridge on one of the islands they were exploring. She looked back and could almost swear Jemma had said the same thing at some point but she couldn’t really remember where. As the three of them crossed the bridge Taisia slowed and turned around putting her hands on her hips.MAY 09-11
“I’m not the only one right?” She asked looking between Sara and Jemma.
Jemma turned to look at both of them, her brow furrowed with concentration. She studied her teammates’ faces, taking stock of their expressions and the creaking of the bridge. An albatross called from over her shoulder and she whipped her head around. But she had done this before. It felt like something that had happened in a dream.
She frowned. “You’re not the only one. If we don’t get out, we’ll be stuck in this forever.” A pause. “Not to be grim and foreboding or anything.”
Sara shook her head. “I’ve got a wicked sense of dejavu.” She had enough experience to know that couldn’t have been good. She had the sense they’d been here before, done this before, but it wasn’t clear enough for her to predict what came next. “Sooo, time loop?” It wasn’t a hard jump to make, especially for someone with plenty of time travel experience.
Taisia groaned. “I liked watching Groundhog Day, never wanted to do the whole thing,” Taisia sighed.
“So, usually there is a purpose behind this kind of thing, so is it just to distract us from something or are we supposed to figure something out?”
Jemma shook her head slightly. “A time loop is a trap. You’re meant to waste your resources while your enemy keeps you from making progress that can unravel their plot. I’m sure we must be close to what’s going on.” She paused.
“To break the loop you typically have to convince yourself - or someone with you - to make a different choice. But it’s a chance. We could be intentionally playing out anything that might break the loop without understanding that we were in it all along.”
“I’m so much better at traps I can punch my way out of,” Sara admitted, groaning softly before a quick glance at Taisia. She suspected their team leader was the same way. This didn’t seem so much one of those things you could fight your way out of. They were going to have to use their heads if they were going to get out of it.
“Maybe we could leave ourselves clues,” she suggested, “so we’ll know for sure what we have or haven’t tried.”
“Me too,” she muttered at Sara’s comment. “Hey,” she said looking between the two other women. “Do our bodies completely reset too? Or could we leave a mark on them?” She wasn’t really sure and hadn’t paid that much attention she often had cuts and bruises and that she didn’t even notice.
“Unless we’ve already tried all of this and we don’t remember it.” She looked at Jemma, the science smart thing was her thing, not Taisia’s.
“Leaving a mark will make us know how many times we’ve re-cycled in this timeline. That’s helpful,” Jemma admitted, her eyes narrowing in thought. “But it doesn’t necessarily break the cycle.” She pressed her hands upon her hips, as if that could help her think more deeply. It seemed as if they didn’t really have options. But that couldn’t be. Instead of focusing on what she knew, she decided to attempt being entirely surprising.
She looked at both her teammates, shrugged, and lifted herself over the bridge to plunge into the water below.
Assuming the mark didn't just disappear when time reset again. Time could be unpredictable, but Sara wasn't good with just not trying anything. She had a feeling there was something to see here that someone didn't want them to get to, but that didn't exactly tell them how to break through.
Shrugging after Jemma jumped, Sara gave a quick glance to Taisia before following their teammate down into the water. She didn't know where Jemma was going with this, but she trusted that she knew what she was doing.
Taisia wasn’t of the mind of just giving up, but she wasn’t expected to see Jemma jump over the bridge, if Sara had been the first one to do it she’d have expected it. Taisia let out a laugh as she was maybe a second behind Sara diving into the water.
The water was cold, really cold, was about all Taisia remembered thinking when the next thing she knew they were standing on dry land again, the only difference, they were all standing there soaking wet.
"Don't know if it worked."
Jemma picked up a log (weathered, brittle) and heaved it against the cave wall. It was her version of a swear without necessarily swearing. She growled in frustration and turned to Taisia with a frown. Before she could continue, however, she took a deep breath and schooled her features.
When she spoke, she was calm. “Okay. Let’s be logical and retrace our steps.”
Raising an eyebrow Taisia opened her mouth to say she didn’t think the log was going to be much work. She wasn’t as frustrated at that moment, mostly because she was a little too amused watching Jemma.
“I don’t think it’s about retracing our steps, my bet is something else is at play here,” there was no way the two of them would just get lost. At least that was what Taisia was telling herself.
“I think we should looking for anomalies, anything out of place, and maybe a way to boost the singles and get word to Sara.”
Jemma hated small, enclosed spaces. They reminded her not of the vastness of her last mission with the SHIELD team but with the constriction inherent in being a slave to that Kree warlord within the Lighthouse. She sighed, knowing her frustration would keep her from concentrating as she needed to in order to find her way clear of this trap. “ … and anomalies along our path, one which might have been the catalyst to this trap? That’s what I was thinking,” was her admittance. She should have been considering COS’ wily ways all along.
She took a flashlight from her pack and shone it on the ground, covering the base of the cave wall and working her way up, trying to see if there was any chink that proved they were at least close to the cave’s outer wall.
Taisia stayed a step behind Jemma in part to make sure nothing came at them from behind and in part to make sure she looked at parts that Jemma might not be with this first pass. Taisia didn’t say anything for a little while.
“So, how are you finding the new team?” She asked as they searched.
She stopped in front of a piece of machinery that didn’t seem to be a part of the cave; that was an interesting find, of course. But what she noticed more than anything was the warmth emanating from her corner. She widened her eyes and turned back to Taisia. “What? Oh. Yes, Taisa I’m sorry. I like it quite a lot. I have been having such trouble fitting in.”
Raising an eyebrow. “Trouble fitting in?” She asked as she felt the warmth as well and took a step closer to it putting her hand out to feel it. “That doesn’t feel natural,” she muttered. “I want your answer about fitting in, but…” She took a deep breath in. “SARA!” She called out on a hunch.
“Taisia? Jemma?” Sara called back. She’d been searching for them for a little while, once she noticed they weren’t with her, but this was the first sign she’d had of where they might actually be and she started to follow the direction her teammates voice had come from.
“Fucking finally,” Taisia sighed. That was a good sign. “Yeah, we’re down here.” With some work they finally managed to get out.
