Going back home had been weird. A part of it was being back in her own world after being away from it for so long. Between Breck and Atlantis, it had been, what, 5 years or something. If you added those freaky dream memories from Lawrence, it felt even longer. Aside from that, though, things had just been fucking weird. So much hadn’t been the way it was supposed to be and that included people Rose knew and loved or the versions of them that existed there. It just made her anxious to get home to the real versions of her loved ones. Hearing about the Strigoi in Atlantis had only intensified that. She’d forced herself to focus on the mission, but the truth was she was worried about the people she’d left behind. Her daughter, her best friend and her ex-boyfriend had all been sent after the strigoi. She knew they’d been caught with one dead and the others restored, she knew Lissa had told her they were safe, but safe could mean a lot of things. It didn’t necessarily mean totally unharmed and she wasn’t going to rest until she’d seen the people she cared about. She’d checked on Lissa and Alex first, of course and had even stopped to check on Adrian, but when she’d realized that Robin was gone, of course she’d gone to see Regina. That’s where she’d been when today’s alerts had come in and her heart sank at how long the list was. She almost hadn’t noticed the name on the arrivals list: Janine Hathaway. Of course it hadn’t taken long to establish contact with her mother and while she hated to leave Regina, she knew she wouldn’t exactly be alone. Besides, it had been so long since she’d seen her mom - not counting that brief trip home when she hadn’t exactly gotten a lot of quality time even after the compulsion that had taken over Court and everywhere else had been broken. Just a month shy of two years ago, almost to the day her mother had left Atlantis. There weren’t many people Rose would admit it to, but she’d really missed her. That was why she’d made plans to meet her, even before going to see her son and husband. As much as she’d missed them, too, well, some things took precedence. Janine was nothing short of skeptical of everything around her, of course, not a soul who knew her would have been surprised by that. But the fact of the matter was that Janine didn’t do panicked or get overcome with emotions in situations like this. If anything, she found herself more calm against the unknown - it put her into a mode of questions, inquiry, and making sure she was on guard. Being in that particular mode had clearly not sat well with the intake people who, very clearly, hadn’t appreciated all of her questions. At least some part of her softened at the notion that her family was here. And much more of her family than she ever could have or would have expected. Moments of having all of them together had been fleeting, such was not uncommon in their world and Janine was still trying to make up for at least her part in that - but they were all here, new additions included. There was certainly no question that Janine immediately agreed to see her daughter. Not only because she did love her and it was just the sort of welcome one might want in a place like this - but because she knew Rose was no bullshit and as much as Janine didn’t think she was dreaming… a little bit of grounding was going to do her some good for the situation. As soon as Janine heard footsteps outside and heard the knock on the door, she pushed herself up off of the couch and walked over - a little smirk on her lips as she opened the door, “Rosemarie.” She said - clearly happy to see her daughter. The Hathaway women weren’t exactly super affectionate, but when Rose saw her mom after so much time had passed without her, she was overcome with the urge to hug her and she gave into the impulse without a second thought. Blame it on the fact that she hadn’t seen the woman in almost two years or whatever. Ivan had only been a few months old when his grandmother had left Atlantis and now they’d just recently celebrated his second birthday. Even as an adult, it was a long time to go without seeing your mom. Of course, she knew the elder Hathaway woman would have a lot of questions and she didn’t linger long in hugging her, pulling back after just a moment and using a smirk of her own to cover any self consciousness over the fact that she’d just really impulsively hugged the woman. Obviously she’d kind of lost her mind for a minute and maybe she could blame it on the fact that she kind of desperately needed a shower and a nap - not that she was going to get either anytime soon. “So, you probably have a lot of questions,” she guessed. When you showed up in a mythical city where your kid had 3 kids of her own and two of them weren’t much younger than said kid, there was no way you didn’t end up with a lot of questions. Less than affectionate or not - this was a circumstance in which Janine was glad to hug her daughter, no matter how briefly. It wasn’t one in which she’d admit to feeling as off as she did, as out of the loop, as… without context or footing. But it was one where she could appreciate the more simple gestures of life that she often missed out on, purely because of her nature - no matter how much she had been trying to improve on that over the last while since she’d actually began reconnecting with her daughter. Her daughter who was now… actually married to Dimitri and had two very adult daughters of her own and of course had a natural child that was perhaps the biggest surprise of all. The marriage, least surprising bit. She was happy for Rose - she’d gotten what her heart wanted and while Janine had many opinions on the life of a guardian she could not think of a man she trusted more than Dimitri with her daughter’s heart. That counted more than the other things, at least here. No, it would have at home as well - even if it took her a little time to truly adjust to it. She’d accepted that they were what each other needed and wanted - even reveled a bit in Abe’s initial teasing of it. Hunting trips, such a good opportunity to learn something truly interesting about someone. “Oh, you know, just a few lingering curiosities.” Rose was certainly more accepting, and that was of course to be expected as she knew her Mother, than the people in intake about the deluge of questions that she obviously had. “Though the girls did beat you to introducing themselves.” Janine said, a little smirk pulling at her lips. “They’re good at that,” Rose said, smiling fondly at the mention of her adoptive daughters. Meeting Taisia had been a hell of a surprise, back in Breck, but it hadn’t been a bad surprise at all and getting to meet Alex had been even better. Having a family wasn’t something Rose had ever let herself want before. She’d known it would likely be a choice between giving up being a guardian or letting someone else raise her kids. She still wasn’t sure how she and Dimitri had managed with the girls. It sounded like Lissa and Christian had helped out a lot, but somehow they’d been able to really be in their daughters’ lives, so much more than she’d ever thought could be possible. Now that she knew them, she couldn’t imagine life being any other way. It was hard sometimes to remember why she’d ever thought she might not want kids. And being in Atlantis, having the girls all grown up and having Ivan - even with the war they were caught in the middle of, Atlantis had given her a chance to have some more semblance of a normal life than she’d ever had at home. Being 23 years old with a toddler and two grown up girls wasn’t what she’d ever pictured for herself, but it was probably pretty damn obvious that Rose was happy here. “I know Intake does their thing, but how about a tour. We could get something to eat, if you want.” It was obvious that Rose was happy here and for now, that was certainly more than enough for Janine to think that staying was likely a good idea. Getting to know her grandchildren, getting to see Rose be so content and flourishing - of course, there had just been a Strigoi attack and that also put her on high alert. What if they showed back up? What if they hadn’t gotten all of them? Too many questions left unanswered about Atlantis so far. She suspected her daughter might actually humour every little last question she had for once. This was hardly a normal circumstance and the way the younger woman - who was now, seemingly, a very well and happily adjusted adult openly spoke, well it warmed Janine in a way she wasn’t entirely used to. However, that was an entirely good thing. Different, after all, in no way had to be a negative. In this situation Janine believed it was quite the positive. Giving her daughter a little half-smirk, half-smile she held back a chuckle, “Unless you’ve changed that much - I imagine the food and a little mild questioning might be the better start.” A joke as much as it was a serious answer. Rose put on a look of mock offense at the even joking implication that there could be any universe in which she didn’t love food. She was a little more mature, it was true. She was a mom now, with kids of her own and she’d had time to really settle here in Atlantis, but Rose was still Rose. “Stone has some good pizza,” she offered, not really giving her mom a choice in where she wanted to eat. Good pizza, some good beer, too. It would be a good spot to grab a good bite and get some of the elder Hathaway woman’s questions answered and she could show her some of the rest of Atlantis on the way. “Come on,” she said, offering her a grin, “it’s my treat this time.” |
