ANISSA PIERCE ✦ OPEN
anissa wakes up with new memories and needs to get out of the house g a few spoilers for black lightning season 2; if anyone wants to tag, the doc is here |
Her dreams jolted her awake like someone had dumped a bucket of ice cold water on her. She woke gasping for breath, heart racing, a light shean of sweat on her brow. There was no doubt in her mind what it all meant. She didn’t need anyone to tell her. She knew, because she’d lived it. She could feel it in her bones: the mixture of pride and concern over Jennifer’s abilities and recklessness, the heartbreak over losing Khalil and Grace (because even though Anissa was sure Grace was still alive, Grace had still left the wreckage of a broken relationship behind when she’d fled), the joy and love that filled her parents’ house as they learned to grow together and fight together and stand up for what was right together. Anissa felt like she’d run a marathon, and it wasn’t even six in the morning. She closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths, trying to will herself back to sleep. What she got instead was a mind that just did not want to shut off, so after tossing and turning for another thirty minutes, she dragged herself out of bed. If sleep was going to evade her, she might as well go for an actual run. Normally, this was where she’d lean on her parents, her sister or on Gambi. Even if she didn’t like their answers, her parents and Gambi always knew what to do, and Jennifer always knew exactly what to say to pump Anissa up and remind her of who she was. Being away from them was tough. Most of the time, she could manage, but that morning, she felt the sharp ache of homesickness like she’d just been stabbed. She didn’t want to leave, though. She had a good thing going in Atlantis. She got to fight for the very existence of reality, and she didn’t have to hide. She had a girlfriend -- one that she was afraid she’d feel guilty about when she first woke up, but that worry disappeared the longer she ran. Grace had left her, after all. What she did feel was fear that Grace wasn’t okay in Freeland, and there was little she could do about it from Atlantis. All she could do was wait. Waiting had felt unbearable to Anissa in Freeland, but she didn’t have a choice but to bear it in Atlantis. She couldn’t do her own sleuthing or go after someone who was terrorizing her hometown. Her hands were tied when it came to the fate of Freeland. Her run took her all the way to the water’s edge at the beach. There, with the toes of her running shoes grazing the surf, she stopped and inhaled deeply. It would’ve been better to just not know anything, Anissa thought. She’d thought, before, that a touch of home would’ve centered her more, would’ve grounded her. She’d thought she needed to know what was going on. Maybe ignorance had been bliss after all, because now she only had more questions than answers. |
