Atlantis Base

Things around the base had felt weird since yesterday and John wasn’t sure whether he should just chalk it up to normal Atlantis or maybe the Sadie Hawkins dance where all the women had almost felt compelled to ask people, even complete strangers, to attend with them. Atlantis always had a tendency to be a little weird, anyway. Whatever weird urges overcame him as he made his way through the base, he did his best to just ignore them. It was during his walk that he saw it. The creature was small and round with brown fur covering it. He couldn’t decide if it was cute or creepy, but he knew without any doubt this was a creature he’d never seen before. “What the hell is that?” he muttered to himself as he watched the creature turn a corner and he picked up his pace to try and catch up to it. When she woke and went to work Helen felt slightly off but attributed it to the bit of a high left over from the Sadie Hawkins dance the night before. Dances and balls had never been of interest to her during her youth. However, this dance had been far more enjoyable than she had initially believed it would be. But now it was a new day and there was work to be done. As the day progressed, Helen, began to realize that what she was feeling had nothing to do with a post-dance high. Instead, she theorized that her slightly racy thoughts about a certain man or anyone who came close to her were due to a small furry creature releasing pheromones throughout the base. Or, at the very least, the Atlantean equivalent of said creature. With a tablet in hand, she set off to see if she could collect more data and/or find the responsible party. Once Helen had gathered enough information she would approach Will and develop a plan for capturing them and then she’d go to her superiors. “Oh, I’m so terribly sorry,” Helen said as she turned the corner and very nearly collided with a man. Her focus had been on scanning the network for information and she hadn’t heard anyone coming down the hall. “I should have been paying more attention to my surroundings. Are you all right?” John nodded, although he was clearly distracted and it wasn’t just the unexpected quickening of his pulse every time he talked to, well, anyone or the fact that he could hear others having a similar reaction to both him and anyone else who happened to be around, although that was certainly a part of it. He was trying to track the creature he’d just seen and figure out where it had gone and talking to her was a distraction from his concentration. “I just saw a... I don’t actually know what it was,” he admitted. “It was kind of round and fuzzy?” John wasn’t the only one distracted by the presence of someone in such close proximity. Helen was equally as distracted but she had experience with this and thus was able to keep it from being quite as obvious. Though it would probably be a good idea to limit how close she got to another. And how long she remained in close proximity to another person. “If my theory is correct, their scientific name is Nubina Atelerix. Or more simply Nubbins.” “Nubbins?” It was a weird sounding name, but weird or not, it was obvious she had some experience with the things. “What are they?” he asked her. “Are they dangerous?” Not everyone here was a soldier. His mission in Atlantis was different than it had been with the Underground, but there was one common thread; he had people to protect here just as he had there. “Nubbins are a small rainforest dwelling abnormal that possess the ability to cloak themselves when threatened,” Helen said in response to his question. Though she intentionally left out that they also had an ability to release pheromones and reproduce like rabbits. First, they needed to catch up with the creature and then she could reveal the one detail she had purposefully left out. “And as for your other question...well, every living thing has the potential to be dangerous.” “There’s something you aren’t telling me.” Having super hearing made it pretty easy to tell when someone was lying or holding something back. John could hear heartbeats, the slightest changes in breathing. Who could perceive a lot of tells others couldn’t and he was positive right now that the scientist was holding something back from him. Helen prided herself on being difficult to read. Very few were able to pick up on when she was holding back. And of those that were able to see through her half-truths and explanations, most were close confidants and employees. So, she was very intrigued that a complete stranger was able to do what many could not. Her years as a scientist and head of the sanctuary network guided her to conclude that the man beside her was most likely an abnormal. Perhaps some type of an empath. "You're right. There is something I'm not telling you," Helen replied. "Help me catch the creature we both saw and I promise to tell you everything that I know." “That would be a hell of a lot easier if I knew what we were dealing with,” John pointed out. Whatever these nubbins were, they weren’t easy to track, not even for someone who could track just about anything or anyone. He’d already learned that you couldn’t always rely on mutant abilities in Atlantis, but the more he knew, the more accurate his tracking would be, whether he could use his powers or he had to do things the human way. "Follow my lead and you'll see that it's not as difficult as you perceive it to be," Helen said as she slid her tablet into the pocket of her lab coat and then looked around the hallway that they were in. When her eyes landed on a fire extinguisher she smiled, walked over to remove it from its holder on the wall and then proceeded to head in the direction that the nubbin had gone. "Come along. This is all we need to catch us a nubbin." |
