She'd known before the message had come through. Something hadn't felt right all day but she couldn't have told anyone what it was. Then it came, pain, sorrow, an overwhelming sense of despair and then.....Luke was gone. Not willingly as most people did but he was gone nonetheless. She felt the empty spot in the Force where he had existed for the last year but what was worse was the empty space in her heart. He had left his cloak when he'd stopped by earlier and Rey went to get it now, picking it up, holding it for a moment, still full of his presence and then she put it on and walked out onto the porch. It was cold but she didn't care, she didn't even feel it. She just wanted to feel Luke and he wasn't here but this was still here and she was grateful that she had it. She found herself remembering the first time she'd seen him. Not the man she'd known here but the man she'd seen on Ach Two, the sad lonely Jedi staring out over the horizon toward something that only he could see much as she was doing now as she looked across the back yard. She remembered the haunted look in his eyes and she had wondered what had put it there. Then she had seen something on the ground, picked it up and found herself here. When she saw him again some months later, he was a different person. Younger, more arrogant, downright irritating if she were honest with herself and she felt a small smile lift her mouth. They had argued a lot but even then there was a connection and eventually that connection grew. He'd been her teacher, her friend, and she had loved him. They never spoke the words, she was afraid to for fear he wouldn't say them back but now she understood. They'd loved each other in ways that went far beyond romantic love, they were bound together by the Force and part of him would always be with her. He might not remember her when he returned home and most certainly wouldn't remember her when they met again on Ach Two but she would never forget him. A little whimper got her attention and she looked down to see Marty shivering next to her. "Oh I'm so sorry," she said and bent down to pick up the little dog and snuggle her inside the cloak. Luke wasn't a large man but the cloak had easily been big enough for more than one person to take shelter within its folds. "That better?" she said and gave a little giggle as Marty licked her nose and settled against her. "He wouldn't want us to be said," she said. She was going to allow herself these few moments though but then she'd go forward. Luke had taught her a lot in the year she'd known him, her skills in the Force had grown but she had much to learn. She wasn't alone in her ability either. There was Mara, as well as her daughters, and Rey would ask them to help her. She had never given up without a fight and she wouldn't let sadness win this battle. The cold was finally starting to get to her and she turned to go back inside, tucking Marty against her side. Pausing for a moment to look out over the yard again she whispered. "I love you. I hope that wherever you are that part of you remembers that." Then she opened the door and went back inside. |
