Running into mistletoe wasn’t actually something that had happened a lot to MJ as of late. She supposed she’d been lucky with it after seeing countless stories ranting about being stuck or...hit and runs, but with awkward kisses. She hadn’t exactly kissed anybody before, so the idea of having to have her first kiss under the mistletoe with either a complete stranger or Peter Parker was kind of a terrifying prospect, all things considered.
Her day was going fairly well - she didn’t really have many people to buy presents for, after all, so she was off the hook in regards to that and ended up just buying a set of watercolours to attempt to pick up yet another hobby to distract herself whilst she was here. She was on the way home when she hit a seemingly invisible wall - somebody looked at her with sympathy but gave her a wide berth which made her realise upon looking up that- right. Mistletoe. Floating in the air above her. Of fucking course.
“Hey, are you okay?” Josie asked as she spotted a girl who looked to be about her age looking distinctly uncomfortable. She noticed the plant floating about her head just a moment after her question and let out a soft “oh” as she realized what was happening. Mistletoe didn’t usually leave people literally stuck, but even after only a couple of weeks in Atlantis she was learning things were different here.
MJ grimaced, giving her a nod. “I mean, I am, but- now you’re kind of stuck here with me, which. Sucks to be us, I guess?” she looked up at the offending plant with a raised eyebrow. “You don’t have superpowers or anything that can burn it, do you? I- theoretically have them, but I don’t exactly get how they work yet. It’s a real party in this place.”
Josie shook her head. “I could try siphoning the magic out of it if I could reach it, but from what I’ve heard about Atlantis, I’m not sure it would actually work,” she admitted. Between her mom, Stefan and Liv, she’d learned that Atlantis magic could be really freaking unpredictable and that trying to actually siphon this stuff might just make things worse.
“I guess someone really wants to make sure people kiss,” she added, shaking her head and laughing quietly. She didn’t mind being stuck. It was an interesting way to meet people, anyway.
“Siphoning magic?” Admittedly, MJ was still getting used to the idea of magic and wizards and powers, despite having them herself all of a sudden - she had no idea how to use them, sure, but they were at least there. It made a change from being a normal high schooler.
“Unfortunately, which is kinda weird if you think about it. Like, who's getting off on putting overly aggressive mistletoe everywhere? It's ridiculous. I'm considering bringing a lighter next time I go out to try and burn it,” she folded her arms across her chest. “Um. I guess we have to kiss, or- something. Wait it out. If you want.”
“I heard it happened last year, too.” Josie didn’t know if that made it better or worse, but it was the kind of whimsy that seemed pretty harmless, especially compared to the crazy things that had happened at home lately.
Waiting it out didn’t seem like the best plan, all things considered. “We’d probably be waiting a while,” Josie pointed out. “I don’t mind, um, kissing you if you don’t.”
“I mean- I don't mind, but I don't- want you to feel weird about it?” God, she was so good at taking boys down a peg or two but when it came to girls, she sucked at communication. Her sarcasm just didn't seem to be playing right now. “Yknow, I'm not- I don't know what I am. And I don't want you to kiss a girl who might be into girls because that could be… Weird for you?” She winced. Smooth, MJ.
Josie laughed softly. It felt a little mean to laugh, but she couldn’t really help it. “I’m actually a very equal opportunity kisser,” she assured her. “So, kissing a really cute girl is definitely not weird at all for me.”
“An equal opportunity kisser,” right. That was good wasn't it? She felt like she should have been way happier that suddenly there was a another girl here into girls and she wasn't going to be a dick about it. Even in NYC and with her attitude, MJ had never felt confident just... outing herself like that. Especially not around Peter. “Well, uh. Let's get this over with then? Wait- I look like a gremlin in a scarf right now. I didn't even brush my hair this morning because I was just gonna shove a hat on it anyway.”
Josie laughed and shook her head. “You look great,” she said. MJ really was gorgeous, at least as far as Josie was concerned. She wasn’t someone Josie minded having to kiss at all. She stepped a little bit closer, pressing her lips gently to MJs with little more preamble, as if to prove she meant what she’d said.
MJ felt the strange force pulling her and preventing her from leaving the mistletoe vanish as soon as she felt lips on hers, her cheeks flushing in a way that couldn’t really be attributed to the cold. The kiss was brief but sweet, with MJ leaning into Josie for a brief moment before pulling away, a shaky smile on her face. “My knight in shining armour. Thank you.”
“It was my pleasure, mi’lady,” Josie said, doing a little curtsy that made her giggle. “I’m always happy to rescue a beautiful damsel in distress.”
She laughed at the curtsey, giving her a little bow of her own in response. “I’d love to stay and court until you’re brave enough to flash your ankles at me, but I really gotta get to my class now. Thank you, though- seriously. If you ever like, need a favour, just...message me on the thing and I’ll try and be there.” MJ was definitely not blushing as she tried to clear the scene as fast as humanly possible. Definitely not.
